And I'd want to have several guest rooms. A lot, actually, if the house is going to be big. Rooms I can use to help people who need a place to stay.

Or! or I'd buy the swankiest New York apt ever.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-07 01:21 am (UTC)(link)As far as what they'd look like and have in them--all of them would have tons of full bookshelves, some would have libraries. They'd all have gardens, whether tiny balcony gardens in New York or a couple acres in northern California, and at least one glass-walled, heated conservatory and a couple streams and ponds. At least one house would be a brightly painted Queen Anne. Lots of them would have murals on the walls and mosaics on the floors. If they were in areas that got cold, there would be rugs, but they'd be on wood floors or tile; I hate carpeting. At least one would have a fireplace I could stand up in. There'd be lots of stained glass windows, lots of skylights, lots of carved wood furniture, and lots of houseplants. And big, fully equipped kitchens. None of them would be tract houses, but none of them would be McMansions either. Although I might go for a castle and stock the moat with alligators.

AND CATS.
Re: Dream House
(Anonymous) 2018-01-07 01:56 am (UTC)(link)I'd prefer rooms to be on the small side, although open plans are okay as long as they are multi-functional spaces. I'd prefer two living areas - one for watching TV that can be closed off behind a door, and one for conversation or reading that can be more open to the other "public" areas of the house.
For the kitchen, I would pay someone to design a wall oven with a door like on the old Frigidaire Flair (https://tinyurl.com/ybdplu6t) because I love the way you lift up the door and it stays there out of the way where you couldn't possibly burn yourself on it, instead of the typical oven door that opens down and out and you have to reach over this hot door to get things in and out of the oven. The oven interior would be more sophisticated and up-to-date and I would either have 2 wall ovens like that or 1 wall oven and a higher end range with a normal door (I don't think a door that goes up would work as well if the oven is below the stove).
I want a bedroom that is very small - just big enough for a queen bed with room on 3 sides - but that opens into a bigger room that would be for all those things that tend to get crammed into bedrooms but have nothing to do with sleeping: clothes storage, exercise area, office space, TV-watching... It would be like a modern "master suite" with a walk-in closet, but the closet would be the bedroom and the bedroom would be for everything else (including the closet).
I'd want a room for sewing and crafts, like I have in my 2-bedroom apartment now. Having that "play room" makes a huge difference, since I actually do stuff in there instead of just day-dreaming about being crafty, and I don't have to worry about that stuff getting in the way of the eating and living areas or cleaning up for company.
Since I can't imagine spending a billion dollars on a house, I'd spend the rest fixing up older, modest-sized houses in middle class neighborhoods in a way that was of good quality and respected their historic character, and then selling them without asking much more than the average home price in that neighborhood, because good old houses deserve to be kept in good shape but I don't want to price out the people who actually live there.
