I am a female writer and I hated "Twilight," so don't you throw scream "misogyny!" because it is bullshit. I disliked the books because they were trite and poorly-written. Get over yourself.

My take on it is that Twilight is intended for a very specific audience...teenage girls. I remember reading The Silver Kiss (http://www.amazon.com/Silver-Kiss-Annette-Curtis-Klause/dp/0440213460/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1215121716&sr=8-1) by Annette Curtis Klause when I was fifteen, and thinking it was so OMGromantic. Twilight is just an updated take on the whole Vampire Romance, which I think is just the latest spin on the "girls like bad boys" trope.

Evidence says only a small percentage of them, based on my own school-wide observations. :/
Say... 2-2.5%? Or, at least, that's how it seems to be in my year grouping.
Even my generally sensible "BFF" told me I only disliked them in order to not be following the crowd, which was basically one of the most irritating things I've ever been accused of doing, since disliking the book is based only on the book for me.
Surprisingly, she decided they were a pile of drivel on reading New Moon and Eclipse, though.

Anyway, you wouldn't believe how many times other girls have asked me "But WHY don't you like Twilight?" More than have asked why I consider myself a secular humanist, or don't believe in God, by a long shot. (Which is completely irrelevant to the discussion at hand, but I find somehow amusing.)
One of my other friends mentioned I didn't like it because there were no "gay men" after I gave her an overly long explanation! What I didn't tell her in reply was that even the idea of femmeslashing with Bella and whatsername, Edward's sister, couldn't ignite any spark of interest in me about the books.
A good book over a bad one with shipping possibilities for me, anyday. Someone missed the point. XD

=o= don't we all like a good bad boy though? A well WRITTEN bad boy, hence Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights. What saddens me in Twilight however is that these characters are poorly presented and show something of an unhealthy relationship which is projected as desirable.

But I've never ever been even faintly interested in Vampires, I even disliked the books by Anne Rice - so the case is entirely lost on me I suppose.

Well, I still do to a point...and you're right, if they're well-written, then especially so. But you're also right about the unhealty-relationships-posed-as-desirable. I don't want that in my life, so why would I want to read about it?

Sure, it was intended for them. Doesn't mean it hits the target all the time or is actually good, but it's exactly the sort of thing a friend of mine adored back in high school.

True, and I hope it didn't sound like I was implying that "all stuff for teenagers is CRAP!" Just that this happens to be, but it also makes no apologies for catering specifically to that demographic, and therefore contains things that just make me roll my eyes when I remember how hard I fell for that kind of thing when I was a teen.
