156: I think it would only make you a bad feminist if you didn't recognize the problems with how these shows treat their women. You're certainly not alone as I'm there are plenty of women who love these shows but don't agree with their writing and presenting of women. At least you have the sense to recognize the problems with the writing whereas many people would not, not just for these series either, for several others as well. I love, love, love Fullmetal Alchemist, for example, but the treatment of women in the narrative of the story makes me see red (particularly in the manga.) Doesn't stop me reading/watching, however.

re: BSG... really? I don't see it. I love that show because it offers more person-based attitude than gender-based, from where I'm standing. Sure, they're in a patriarchy, but better that than the writers trying to create a matriarchy or a truly equal society and be utterly blasted for getting it wrong.

I've only seen Doctor Who, so my comment was more aimed towards that.

Ah, okay. Fair enough-- that I have seen and noted.

Well, I LOVE LOVE the show, but I think it does suffer from some gender issues, though less than most shows not in HBO. They've killed off more female characters (who appeared in several episodes and had names and lines) than men, WAY WAY more especially in the last season or two. They focused WAY more on the Lee-Bill relationship than on the Starbuck-Bill relationship (which was mentioned like twice post S1) even though I think there could be some fascinating stuff going on there. I also think the Roslin-Starbuck relationship was the biggest mistake BSG made as a series, not giving it enough attention and not developing it at all past S1. We got all this run-of-the-mill Lee has daddy issues stuff for YEARS and a relationship between a female president and a female hotshot pilot never got any space, interaction between two characters could have been FASCIATING.

They do not and never have had women wokring together. Seriously. Laura even had a female aide and all they did with it was turning her evil and giving her maybe 2 lines before that. Kara has never gotten along with a female in her life except maybe a line she said to another pilot that wasn't an insult. And the thing is, with the amount of women they've killed off, neither Laura nor Kara have any believable females to connect and interact with.

One of my pet peeves - Laura banned abortion and we got exactly 1 episode dealing with it. One. Zero exploration as to how that descision might have affected women (or Laura's popularity among women) or Laura herself in a soceity that previously had mostly free abortion laws and is currently living in, well, in many aspects, HELL. The show was so good about showing the aftermath of almost every major sociological descision, but they couldn't show what generally happens when you ban abortions? I don't buy that Laura wouldn't know/wouldn't be concerned.

BSG is not as bad as most stuff on TV, it even makes a lot of progress in a lot of fields, but it is still written from a male POV and habitually rates female-character issues lower than male-character issues. That's my IMHO, of course.
