Re: Unpopular opinions about news stories

This is broad as opposed to specifics, but sometimes you'll hear that someone at a Dunkin' Donuts (as an example) in Tampa, Florida said something racist. Suddenly everyone's crying to boycott every single Dunkin' Donuts, leaving bad reviews for every single Dunkin' Donuts...

But why? Why should an entire business pay for one shitty employee at one location? If I worked at the Dunkin' Donuts where I live (nowhere near Tampa, Florida), I'd be pretty pissed if no one came because of someone I had nothing to do with.

This is honestly the reason I'm hesitant about boycotts myself. I ask myself "is this a problem with the company?...or just that one [franchise name] in some place else"?

It feels unfair to me to punish everyone and it feels nonsensical to boycott the company when it's the person or that location that's the problem.

Yep, this.

It's actually not that hard to determine whether the issue was due to a company policy or a lone kook. That one Walmart greeter who's kind of racist? Not a reason to boycott Walmart. Walmart's corporate policy of paying their sales associates as little as they can legally get away with and keeping them just under the hours where the company would be required to offer them benefits? Good reason to shop elsewhere if you can.

That said, there are a lot of places in the US where Walmart is the only affordable shopping option within a reasonable travel radius. Getting all self-righteous at people who just need to buy school supplies for their kids doesn't help anyone.

I think boycotts are generally dumb and ineffective, anyway. The only way I can see it making a difference is if a significant percentage of people who regularly buy from that business boycott it in the long term. Boycotts that last a day do nothing. "Boycotts" from people who rarely or never buy from the company do nothing. But all the yelling and internet outrage make people feel good, I guess.

"Boycotts that last a day do nothing."

Sure boycotting need a lot of works. Is not that hard to boycott some company if they keep giving different marketing ads each time they we're made.

Are they that much of signification if went nationwide...?
