I haven't seen the new season. I have seen the original two, and I recommend watching it, just on its own terms. It's definitely uneven, but its high moments are so unbelievably good. It's atmospheric, dramatic, really well-acted, really smart, and really, really weird. I think it definitely holds up. The caveat, though, is that like it kind of goes off the rails about halfway through the second season - once you find out the resolution of the initial mystery, the show is left spinning its wheels and coming up with new stuff, some of which works, and some of which definitely doesn't.

Anyway: original Twin Peaks - strong recommend especially if you're willing to skip a bunch of the second half of the second season.

+1 to this. Stop watching the show once Laura Palmer's killer is revealed, and you'll have almost a perfect show on your hands.

The only downside is you miss out on Denise, which is a shame because she's great.
