Same, There have been other force users who weren't part of the Skywalker lineage, and i'm not sure why people don't get that, having this in the main movie storyline goes "Hey, we're tired of the Skywalkers too, time to open the world up - after we give you two spinoffs of people who were closely associated with them, but better late than never."

Has there ever been a story in the verse about some kind of Force Eugenics experiment? I'd read that.

Would eugenics really be out of place within the moral universe of Star Wars? It seems like exactly the sort of thing I would expect a Star Wars movie to promote.

I don't get why fans were so angry Rey wasn't a Skywalker or whatever. Who cares? But then I don't think the series is sacred.

I don't get why fans were so angry Rey wasn't a Skywalker or whatever.

Personally, I'm basically neutral on the original three Star Wars movies, and I've liked 7 and 8, so I really love Rey being a "nobody," and I completely agree with most of the comments in this thread.

But I have a friend who really dislikes that Rey isn't a Skywalker, and it seems to be because, in his mind, Star Wars is fundamentally about the Skywalker lineage bringing balance to the force. As far as he's concerned, that's always been at the center of the Star Wars story, and to have Rey not be a Skywalker completely breaks the cohesiveness of that basic narrative core.

At first I was annoyed with the "I'm nobody" thing because when you grow up as a fan of something you-as-a-child will tend to imagine yourself as one of the special players in your favoured fictional universes. And I think in Star Wars (for a lot of people) that was the Skywalkers. Then I realised that wouldn't it have been better for me as a little girl to believe I could've been ordinary anonymous me and still a Force user and a hero? When I thought about it I could see why the decision was made.

I liked Rey not having a special lineage and it totally made sense. There were about 10,000 Jedi when Anakin joined the Jedi Order and 9,999 of them were not Skywalkers.

WORD! The number of people I've spoken to who are upset about Rey being a "nobody" is baffling to me. Haven't we had enough Skywalker Family Drama™️ yet? It's awesome that her sensitivity to the Force isn't based on who she's related to.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-12 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mind Rey being a nobody. If I had any fan theory I liked, it was her being a Kenobi but her being nobody is fine. But I am so sick of this line that it's somehow new and different and so very needed. All the Jedi were nobody until Anakin. Anakin's family is our soap opera family. Just because they're connected to each other doesn't mean that you ever had to be to be a Jedi and use the Force. I never got eugenics vibes from Star Wars. You won't believe me but I honestly didn't care about Rey's parentage. But all this talk about Rey Nobody fixing things has really turned me off the notion.

I think that this might not even be the final decision. They left a backdoor open in that whole scene should they change their minds about it.
I don't mind her not being a Skywalker (the main reason why I would have wanted that is to kill off the Reylo romance) but I am a little irritated that they went with a very bland solution for now, because that way, parts of Rey's visions while touching the lightsaber in TFA seem like oddly wasted scenes.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-12 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not angry, but I am a bit disappointed, but that's only because I (alone and not as any other fan) watch for the Skywalkers (and their hanger-oners like Han Solo).

But they're not written for me so I"m not going to rant and rave about it. I'm going to go with the story until I don't like it anymore and I still like it...

(Anonymous) 2018-01-13 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. That reveal and Rose were the best parts of the movie.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-13 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I loved that she was a nobody because it made her accomplishments that much more important. They were HERS, not because she was related to somebody famous or legendary, but because she earned them on her own merits with her own abilities.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-13 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Why would someone's accomplishments matter less because of who they are related to?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-13 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
That is a question people seem to have trouble answering.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-13 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
C'mon, you know that if she'd been a Skywalker everyone would have been saying "Well, of course she can use the Force, she's related to Luke" and constantly comparing her to him.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-13 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
As it stands, the narrative is basically saying, "Rey is good with the force because Rey is good with the force." Had she been a Skywalker, the narrative basically would've been saying "Rey is good with the force because Skywalkers are good with the force." There is definitely a difference there.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-13 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I cannot believe how mad people are about her not being a Skywalker. Just because the previous movies focused on them doesn't mean other people cannot be strong force users.

To be honest, I was totally down for her being Luke's secret daughter but now I like the idea that she comes from nothing. It would be even weirder if the force was some nepotistic energy that only sticks to certain bloodlines. Everything we know about the force shows that it's equal amongst sentient beings... and everything else.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-13 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't dislike Rey not being related to anyone from the franchise prior, (actually a relief IMO) but I disliked the fact that the way it was presented almost felt like it was being rubbed in our face.

I'm worried about where the franchise is headed. Between TFA and TLJ it seems obvious that there wasn't any overarching plot planned out for this new trilogy at the start. (To be fair, my overall opinion of things may be influenced by me being a little salty that everything that the OT trio fought for was destroyed and the galaxy is even more down the sh*tter than it was with the Empire at the helm.)

(Anonymous) 2018-01-13 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I'll believe it when the credits are rolling on the 3rd movie and they haven't revealed her *~true~* parents.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-13 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm proud when one of my GC comments gets made into a secret!

But yeah, considering all the weird stuff I've seen about how Jedi were evil to be celibate because they should be breeding more Force Users and selecting for stronger lineages, I'm really hopeful for the moving away from that in canon.
