How to make rl frinds who are into/know about fandom-y shit

(Anonymous) 2018-01-13 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
How do you make rl friends you can talk to fanfic about when you are an adult? Or at least who won't think you're a weirdo if you like that stuff? Especially when cons are so expensive.

IME:

1) make nerdy friends who like fanfiction on Twitter
2) hang out with those friends in real life

How do you make online friends who actually live in your area though? Just keep rolling the dice until someone lives close enough?

basically

obviously, it's easier the more people live near you

Alas all the online friends I have made live in Australia, Florida or Nevada for some reason (I live near none of those places)

Well, good luck to you anyways

Go to meetup.com or a similar site, search our nerdy groups (board game groups, video game groups, role-playing, trading card games etc). Or seek out those groups at university if you attend. Start going. Get to know the people there. Chances are that there's going to someone there who's fannish in the way you want, or at least accepting of being fannish. Go slow though - some nerd groups look down on fanfic style fannishness, so feel people out before letting it all hang out.

I've made friends at the bus stop just by wearing something fandom-ish. I tend to find that if someone is into that stuff, they'll comment on it first and you go from there. My keychain for my work keys is a little Wheatley flashlight from Portal 2 and it broke the ice with 3 different people when I started working.

I'm way too shy to really initiate conversations about fandom stuff with most people, so wearing anything fandomy (even really subtle stuff) usually does the work for me.

I wish I knew, nonny. It'd be nice to have a RL fandom friend to squee over things, but all my online friends live really far away.

I dunno, maybe it helps to ease into it? And understand not every nerd is into every level of nerd-dom.

I'm probably not the best person to say anything, because I'd never admit to writing fanfiction IRL even if I knew others did it. It's just a weird thing of mine.

like was said above, there's fandom friends and there's fandom friends - all of my friends irl are fandom-related but I only ever mention fanfic to one of them (and we happen to live together). There's different levels of letting your nerd flag fly and sometimes there's literally nobody irl who will mesh with you as a friend and be down with talking about that.

honestly, conventions are the best places to meet people who might actually nerd at your level. you don't have to go to the 10k-person, $60/weekend ones, look for the $25 ones. people nerdy enough for all types of fandomy shit will go to the tiny rinky-dink ones because fandom is their life and that's all they do, is hit every convention in the state.

Look for cheap cons? A lot of nerd groups, especially in colleges, will hold free or cheap ones. And most comic cons tend to be $5-10 for a day pass.

It's generally the ones that focus on Industry Guest Appearances that charge you an arm and a leg, the social ones tend to be much more affordable.
