This, although it's more a problem with the entire new trilogy for me. Luke, Leia, Chewie, and Vader were my favorite Star Wars characters and I always hoped that new stories about the first three would be, well, hopeful, in the sense that ultimately, good things happened to and for them. Instead, Leia has spent decades fighting yet another Evil Empire that claimed her son, who's an unstable murdering maniac. Luke is a bitter hermit and he only stops being bitter to die. Chewie lost his best friend, Leia first lost Han when they split, and then when it looked like they might reconcile, he was killed by their son.

I don't hate the new characters (okay, except for Kylo for being an unstable whiny murderer and Hux for being an annoying Space Nazi) but I wish the new movies had given my favorite characters from the originals less depressing lives. I'm having a hard time getting into the new characters because I keep imagining that 3 years from the events of TLJ they'll think they've earned happiness and peace, and then 30 years down the line it'll turn out that it was a brief respite and they only got five years before it was back to watching their friends die and planets blow up.

Oh, and don't forget the part where if Luke had actually given into that dark impulse and killed Ben, instead of being instantly horrified by it and stopping himself -- everyone except Luke would have been better off. That's pretty fucked up for Star Wars.

I disagree that just about everyone would be better off. It would have changed very little, especially on a galactic scale. The First Order was a thing before Ben Solo was born. And he didn't seem to be very good at his job, as Snoke constantly harped on how disappointing Kylo Ren was.

Should have clarified that to be "Just about everyone that we've been introduced to," although I'd have to disagree about Kylo Ren being bad at his job since it's blindingly obvious that Snoke's "you're such a disappointment" song was part of his emotional manipulation and not an accurate job assessment. If he'd actually been bad at his job, Snoke would have just killed him.

I disagree with both points. Sure, Han Solo and Lor San Tekka are still alive. But Starkiller is still operating, Snoke is still alive. Finn is most likely still a stormtrooper and Rey is living in her delusion. Han and Leia have lost a son and a brother.

And from what we've seen, Kylo was given one task (locate Luke) that he failed. Snoke wasn't going to kill him. The whole reason Snoke wanted Kylo Ren was because of how unique he was.

Han and Leia lost a son and a brother anyway. Losing Ben before he became evil enough to try to burn the galaxy down and kill them all would have been a blessing. Without Kylo destroying or corrupting his entire school full of Jedi initiates, the Resistance isn't down to zero trained Force sensitives and Snoke loses most of his guard. The Resistance has added resources and lost an enemy that knows most of them intimately. The idea that this would hinder their efforts to stop the First Order is ludicrous.

And emo boys with daddy issues aren't unique, even in Star Wars movies. Snoke wasn't going to keep a dangerous incompetent at his side just to round out his idiot collection.

A few points:

Luke chose to go into exile.

There's no guarantee Luke would have let his trainees fight in a war, since he seems to have some knowledge of how the old Jedi Order fucked up. Plus we don't know the ages/abilities of those padawans.

Snoke's Praetorian Guard wasn't Force sensitive.

Kylo Ren didn't know anything about the Resistance that wasn't already public knowledge. It was formed after he had lost contact with his mother.

Snoke wasn't going to kill Kylo Ren, an asset he had been cultivating since Ben Solo was a child, a person with "truly special" potential, for failing him. He tortured him instead, like we saw in TLJ.
