122. IDK, maybe it also has something to do with how the phrase "proud to be an American" has been coopted by loud, obnoxious people with awful ideals? Not that everyone who's proud to be an American is a jerk like that, but unfortunately people like that have come to be associated with the phrase, just like they've come to be associated with Christianity. It sucks, but I can understand why people would be wary of the phrase.

129. Really? I'm not huge into musical theater fandom, but I know my Sondheim, and I distinctly recall reading critical essays that questioned the necessity of her death. As a general rule, second acts, especially Sondheim ones, are very controversial critically--especially the second acts of Sunday in the Park with George and Into the Woods. Of course ITW's second act is necessary, but there's a lot of argument over whether it really needed to go that far into kill-'em-all territory.

Too Big: The problem is knowing when you're expressing justified anger and when you're being a rude asshole. Problem is all the people who think they're ~*~super cool~*~ for being the latter.

I really don't think that's an excuse. People should be mature enough to realize that a few batshit screamers don't represent an entire group.

No, it's not an excuse for being a dick to someone who says they're proud to be an American, but...the right wing's hijacking of patriotism and religion goes a little deeper than the usual "it's always the crazy ones who get the most attention" phenomenon. Which is unfortunate, because true patriotism (i.e. actually questioning your government and fighting to make your country better because you care about the values it stands for) and religion can be great things.

So yeah, it's still stupid to hate on someone just for expressing patriotism, but the phrase "proud to be an American" has become so thoroughly associated with dumbasses who make everyone's life harder that I don't blame people for being wary of someone who expresses it...because a lot of the time they do turn out to be one of Those People. :/

For me that secret speaks of how totally enamoured fanbrats are of animation and comics from Japan, enamoured enough to not give "western" animation and comics a second thought. Fanbrats come with an attitude of every manga and every anime is superior because they come from Japan, not on any other merit like skill, talent, or novelty.

Fanbrats need to learn that, like everything else in the world, there is no superior medium, only superior examples. Like everything else in the world, the vast majority of published works are mediocre at best.

Also - fanbrats wouldn't have their precious anime without American influences, especially Disney. Fanbrats, grow up, shut up and suck it.

Yeah, Sunday in the Park with George is very radically different from act one to act two, and it certainly is a common theme with Sondheim.

That's intriguing that critics raised the same questions I did; do you know where I could find any of these articles? I'd like to read them.

I still love both Sunday and Into the Woods, but yeah, Sondheim does struggle with second acts.

I can't recall at the moment; some of them may have been in a collection of critical essays I have. I'd try to dig up the book to find the title, but unfortunately my room is a wreck at the moment, so I'd just wind up sucked into a black hole of off-season clothes and New Scientist back issues. But I do know that there's a published book of essays about Sondheim, and it has some interesting stuff.
