Advice needed

[personal profile] thewakokid 2018-01-14 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
So Last week I was unwell.

Tuesday I went home early from work.
Wednesday I called in sick. Boss sounded pissed off.
Thursday I went into work even though I was feeling like hell, but wound up leaving early again. This also pissed the boss off, because if I'm ill he'd rather I either come in and work a full day or just not come in at all, than have me come in sick and only work half a day.
So, feeling like hell, I called in sick on friday.

Btw, there is no sick pay. If I'm off sick I get fuck all which I can live with, to be honest. The real concern is being unreliable. I also have a health issue that makes it so I seem to catch a lot of bugs. like last year my sick record ended up being about 12 days, which is not great since 8 days is supposed to be the maximum. I'm not permanent staff, tho, and I'm not shy about talking about the health issue, so everyone knows I keep getting sick, so that's why I got away with it I think.

Anyway Sunday comes around and I'm feeling better. Throat still a touch sore, still sneezing, still run down, but if I'd been asked to go in this morning I thing I could have managed it, although I don't know how I would have faired, since I did need to take 2 naps today.

My dilemma. Tomorrow. If I'm feeling too ill to go in, I'm stopping off again - Obviously - But I doubt that'll be the case. If I'm 100% better, I'm going in to work - Obviously - But I doubt that'll be the case, so what do I do if I'm feeling like I am today? passable in the morning, but still kinda run down. Do I risk going in and flagging half way through the day, thus pissing off my boss - and missing out on another day in bed, which I won't lie, I would really like because I am ill but also kinda lazy at the best of times - Or do I run the risk of looking unreliable, err on the side of caution and take another day off?

What should I do? What would you do?

Have you applied for FMLA?

You’re not in the US so it doesn’t apply. Family and Medical Leave.

Yeah, we don't have anything like that.

If your concern is what's going to look best to your boss, you should go in and tough out the day no matter what.

That's obviously not the right decision for your well-being or success. At the same time, it sounds like your boss is an asshole, and that's something that's out of your control. So I think the real question is: how much does your manager's opinion matter to you? How important is it?

Naw, he's not an ass-hole. Like I say, I was ill so much last year. He can't help but think I'm taking the piss.

And it kinda matters to me, yeah. He's not a bad guy and a good chunk of the team is already off (One guy is about to go into his 3rd month of absence. He has the Flu. Like bedridden levels of flu) so he see's me, a perpetual sick note, and he can;t help but being pissed off.

That said, Yeah, I don't know. I don't know if I want to say off because it's the smart thing to make sure I get totally better... or if it's because I'm lazy. Bah. I don't know. Hell, I might be totallt better tomorrow.

Personally, I would go in and give it a try. I figure that half a day's work is better than none, and some times I do get feeling better as the day goes along. Just really try to rest and relax in your non-work hours, because you really need it when you've been sick. My two cents.

Depends on the job. If it's the kind of office work where you can get away with zoning out a bit, I'd go in. If it's the kind of thing where if you zone out or fuck up something minor you're going to get in trouble, then stay home.

It is exactly that kind of work, but I'm not good at not stressing at work. I do not find it easy to take it easy at work.

I regret everything.

I wouldn't try going in. Staying at home and resting gives you a better chance at getting better faster, than going to work for half a day and leaving early.

(And I say that as someone who had to take 62 sick days last year, because of a broken foot.)
