How depressing is Handmaid's Tale?

Both the book and show? I know it IS dark as fuck but does it end on a depressing note? Just wondering whether or not I can handle watching it or reading it.

SPOILERS FOR THE HANDMAID'S TALE BOOK AND SHOW

The book ends on an ambiguous note, with Offred going away in a van which may be the underground saving her or may not. (Then there is a weird epilogue about people studying the book in the future but it doesn't reveal anything about what actually happened to Offred.)

The first season of the show also ends with her going to an unknown place in a van, actually, though since we're getting a second season it's a safe assumption that she survives.

Things that are more positive in the show than the book: Her friend Moira is able to escape to Canada, and her husband is still alive and also in Canada. Also she seems to make some headway in encouraging other handmaids to resist which is not the case in the book. However there are a few nasty dark moments which are only in the show and not the book.

I loved them both but found the show harder to take than the book.

Book: the main narrative ends on a "final shot of the wobbling pendulum from Inception" note of uncertainty and noncommitting. The book itself then adds an extra chapter from another POV which is both reassuring and frustrating.

I haven't seen the show, I found the book to be frustrating, sad, and depressing as hell. Ambiguously 'good' ending, I suppose, re the epilogue,but....
Meh.

I briefly considered rereading it when I heard about the series coming out, but then decided, nope, that's not a good self-care plan.

It's really not.

I actually enjoyed reading the book, and I didn't find myself depressed over it or anything. But I guess that's probably just me, seeing the other replies.

It's a really good book, imo, but I definitely found it a bit hard to take. I think for me the thing that made it so hard to read is that I was just incredibly angry throughout so much of it, and I've always found anger - especially the helpless anger in the face of injustice, which Handmaid's Tale inspires - a particularly distressing emotion.
