I'm only watching the episodes w/ people I like.

So that's that one lone happy one, that one greenlit for a movie, and the museum one.

Which one was greenlit for a movie? Google isn't telling me for some reason.

S1 episode 3, whatever The Entire History of You is.

It's not actually being made it's just greenlit. So I guess that means less greenlighting and more "Hey, you can make it if you want to,"

Thank you! I guess it could make a good movie, theoretically at least.

I just read a review of Electric Dreams that called it a softer version of Black Mirror with more happy endings. So you might try that? Mind, I haven't seen it myself, and I'm not always a fan of Philip K. Dick.

It's got a dystopian sci fi theme. I don't think that's the same thing as being anti-technology.

It seems inclined towards anti-tech to me.

Since the creator said it's specifically about mankind's dependence on technology. In fact, Charlie Brooker said, "If technology is a drug – and it does feel like a drug – then what, precisely, are the side effects?" I like Black Mirror but I think it is at least a cautionary tale of what technology could lead to (with some very obvious references to the technology of today). So yes I would agree that it's to some degree anti-technology.

As far as the OP, I wouldn't compare it to The Twilight Zone either.

Re: It seems inclined towards anti-tech to me.

I don't think that argument holds water. If Brooker is comparing technology to a drug, then it's unlikely he's pointing out that it's evil. Drugs can be useful - life saving, even! But they can be abused. Just like technology. Like rosehiptea said, it's a cautionary tale. But I don't think that's the same thing as being an anti-technology circlejerk.

ayrt

Drugs can be useful, but often times when someone uses the generic word drug, they mean something like cocaine or heroin. And even if he was talking about something like oxycodone, he is fairly specifically speaking about a dependence or addiction, which are generally not considered good things. And while some side effects are actually really good things, most of them are not something people want. So, I say it's more inclined to anti-tech than pro-tech or even neutrality.

Agreed, see my opinion below. It's not the tech that drives the misery in this show. it's people being people that does it.

The Christmas one with Jon Hamm (I think--don't want to even look it up because I might have to remember it again) wrecked me for days. Far too depressing for my escapist TV watching.

I remember that one. I will refrain from reminding you of it but damn it messed me up too.

I have such weird feelings about Black Mirror. I can recognize that it's well-made, but I'm a little tired of every story taking the fast train to worst possible scenario-ville. In a way, after a certain point the dystopias no longer seem very complex or original. If you take almost any element of modern life and push it to extremes and base a society on it, you could end up with a dystopia. Many of the episodes left me unhappy without actually making me think much.

I've gotten the impression there are funnier/more uplifting episodes later on, but I felt the same.

I'm not done with Season 4 yet but the first episode had some funny moments. I mean it was twisted and disturbing but sometimes also funny. I wouldn't call it "uplifting" though.

I much preferred Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams. I mean, both series had some great episodes and some that didn't grab me as much, but overall I like Electric Dreams more. Maybe give it a try?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-16 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
I wasn't interested in this show until it was repeatedly compared to Twilight Zone. So they're not really alike?

I love anthologies but dislike it when technology is presented as evil.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-16 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
It's not so much that technology is evil, but that humans' relationship with technology can sometimes lead to negative consequences. In some cases, it's that old adage that "be careful what you wish for, you just might get it."

For the most part, I see Black Mirror presenting technology as a tool that people occasionally use to be shitty to each other. Something that seems like a good idea at first, but due to misuse or overreliance, takes a turn for the worse.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-16 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
It's a modern version of Twilight Zone, to be sure. It's set in the not too distant future where technology can augment reality/society/entertainment, and people tend to make small but understandable decisions that soon spiral out of control. Some of them end warmly, some bittersweet, most are unsettling.

San Juniperno and Hang the DJ are the only two relatively uplifting eps. Have you tried those?

I don't think it's anti-technology.

The tech is pretty damn cool and does everything it's supposed to.

I think, like the twilight zone before it, the show is anti-human.

None of the issues in these shows come from the tech, it all comes from the humans fucking up with the tech.

"Transhumanism is about how technology will eventually help us overcome the problems that have, up until now, been endemic to human nature. Cyberpunk is about how technology won't."
