Re: What media was recommended to you, that you ended up hating?

Harry Potter. To be fair, my friend had grown up with them and had a lot more nostalgia for them, which probably made her as keen on them as she is, but after managing to get through all of the books, I honestly just stared at a wall for a while wondering how grown ass adults could be so into it. It wasn't... bad, I guess? Just stunningly mediocre (even for children's/young adults fare) considering the hype behind it.

My friend's still pissed off that they didn't change my life.

The writing is definitely mediocre, but I think the archetypes speak to a lot of people on a basic and emotional level, hence its ongoing popularity.

The vast majority of the fiction I read is literary fiction, I mainly pick from the Pulitzer/Booker/Governor Generals shortlists because that keeps things simple, and I've never understood the people who argue the writing in Harry Potter is mediocre. Like, what are you reading? Is it just nothing but Grapes Of Wrath and For Whom The Bell Tolls every day at your house?

Maybe because I'm tired, but this comment made me laugh so hard.

Same though. But I couldn't even get through the first book before I decided I didn't want anything to do with HP.

My best friend adores Harry Potter and tried really hard to get me into it. I just didn't like either the books or the movies. Wasn't my thing.

I thought they were entertaining enough, but I so get you on the didn't change your life thing. That's an attitude I've run into a lot from Harry Potter fans, like it's a crime merely to *like* HP.

I mean I love the Harry Potter books, don't get me wrong, but I largely agree.

For people who *did* grow up with them, I can understand exactly why they were so monumental. But someone getting into them as an adult, especially now that all the books are released, I think it'd be much harder to look past the problems with them. Even for me reading them as they came out, by the end of book 6 I was a lot more critical and book 7 turned me off completely.
