What media was recommended to you, that you ended up hating?

The Mortal Instruments. It was SOOOOO bad. I really tried because it was a favorite of a friend but I can't.

The Game of Thrones books. I've tried the books and audiobooks but I just cannot get into them.

The Mortal Instruments.

Wait, the movie or the show? I found the movie bad; I found the show unwatchable (judging solely by the first three episodes).

But then, I adore Lily Collins. Like, I don't even know why, I just saw her and my brain immediately went, "She is perfect; you love her and you want to be her." So I kind of vaguely enjoyed Mortal Instruments for that reason, despite it being terrible. Also, at least the movie had enough of a budget to semi-successfully pull off its special effects, unlike the show which looks like a reject from the 90's.

I just...didn't get Mortal Instruments at all. I didn't understand cutting a demon away from a child or why you'd want to/gain from it. It wasn't like the demon was attached physically to the human. To me, it was the equivalent of stealing a kid's pet. A shitty thing to do, but not something I'd call evil...or worth centering a whole novel/series around.

I also 2nd your GoT comment. There were too much space between character chapters, and I'd forget what the last thing was that they were doing. And it was boring. The stakes seemed pretty meh.
Edited (I confused Mortal Instruments with His Dark Materials! Sorry!) 2018-01-16 02:08 (UTC)

God yes. The books of both series you mentioned. So terrible.
The shows are more appealing simply for the pretty people and the ability to fast forward anything too boring.

Well, no wonder. It's a Draco/Ginny fanfic with the serial numbers filed off, and the original was bad enough.

The Walking Dead. Ugh good god. I watched six seasons of that shit because "the writing totally gets better!" Spoiler alert: it does not.

Someone who agrees with me! I actually really liked the first season of the Walking Dead, the one that was only 6 episodes. We then continued watching and got bored, so gave up. Picked it up again when people said it was good, but were particularly underwhelmed and we got bored again.

Witch Hunter Robin. I like anime but that bored the hell out of me.

Honestly, I loved WHR only for Robin. ^^;;

iZombie. My friend insisted I would love it. It's dreadful.

Harry Potter. To be fair, my friend had grown up with them and had a lot more nostalgia for them, which probably made her as keen on them as she is, but after managing to get through all of the books, I honestly just stared at a wall for a while wondering how grown ass adults could be so into it. It wasn't... bad, I guess? Just stunningly mediocre (even for children's/young adults fare) considering the hype behind it.

My friend's still pissed off that they didn't change my life.

The writing is definitely mediocre, but I think the archetypes speak to a lot of people on a basic and emotional level, hence its ongoing popularity.

The vast majority of the fiction I read is literary fiction, I mainly pick from the Pulitzer/Booker/Governor Generals shortlists because that keeps things simple, and I've never understood the people who argue the writing in Harry Potter is mediocre. Like, what are you reading? Is it just nothing but Grapes Of Wrath and For Whom The Bell Tolls every day at your house?

Same though. But I couldn't even get through the first book before I decided I didn't want anything to do with HP.

My best friend adores Harry Potter and tried really hard to get me into it. I just didn't like either the books or the movies. Wasn't my thing.

I think there's a large number of people who have had a friend give or recommend Ready Player One to them - "OMG you'll love this cause you're so into geeky stuff!" - and then hated it. I'm still avoiding the topic with a couple friends who loved it.

Infamous, I love superheroes so my bf recommended it to me thinking that I'd really enjoy it, I did not.

The gameplay and powers were really fun and nicely designed, but I could not for the life of me stand any of the main characters(Cole was so fucking boring, his bff was an irritating shit-head and his gf was... I can barely remember her tbh but I know I didn't like her either), the only character I even vaguely enjoyed was the first villain you kill. I very quickly stopped playing the game after that.

I was recommended The Host (the South Korean monster movie) by a friend, and also by the internet (reviews of it are overwhelmingly positive), and I ended up hating it. Like, I can't even start on what didn't work for me. Nothing. The answer is nothing. Nothing about it worked for me. Everything was bad.

Basically, I think maybe I just loathe that particular director's style/vision/narrative sensibilities, because I also hated Okja, which was directed by him as well.

Postmodern Jukebox. I really dislike their twee take on popular songs that don't even use the best parts. No harmonica in Timber? Where's Thrift Shop's bass line?

Plus, they strike me as... smug? Like, when Weird Al covers a song, I get the feeling he respects the original artist, not so much with Postmodern Jukebox.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I do not care for them.

The Shannarra books. I like fantasy. I like high fantasy. But these books just did nothing for me.

Melissa Marr's Wicked Lovely. A well meaning friend recommended to me like it was YA fantasy that was the antithesis to Twilight. I was like no, it's crappy in a different way, but still crap.

Spoilers for Mortal Engines and Kitty Norville

[personal profile] cakemage 2018-01-16 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
I really like steampunk, so a friend suggested I read The Mortal Engines. It's admittedly a cool premise, but good gods was it bleak, with a majorly downer ending, with all of the likeable characters dying pointlessly at the end.

I'm also a fan of werewolves, so lots of people said I should check out the Kitty Norville series. None of them thought to warn me about the all of the rape and skeevy sexual politics in it, though. I mean, the first book is otherwise good (I didn't read any of the others), but I try to avoid media that involves a lot of rape, and did not enjoy being blindsided by it.

Supernatural

Gave it a try because of best friend, watched two and a half season, never went back for it.
