The Shannarra books. I like fantasy. I like high fantasy. But these books just did nothing for me.

I enjoyed them when I was a teen, but I'd never recommend them to a Tolkien fan. It'd be like, hey, you like Tolkien, right? Here's a really, really watered down version of his universe with a post-apocalyptic backstory.

Yup. That was what it felt like. The Backstory to me is far more interesting than the actual books. I like some of the author's other stuff.

oh, yeah, those are brutal. I read a bunch of them when I was about 10 years old and willing to read anything with elves in it but boy, they are not good books. Literally less original than Forgotten Realms books.

Yup. I haven't tread the Forgotten Realms books. Too scared. Honestly, I don't even need complete originality. Tolkien borrows heavily from myths and legends. Other fantasy authors borrow from things. The point is to borrow and make it your own, to write actually good books. And those were not good books at all.

tbh, Forgotten Realms is tons better than Shannara. I read both series in my teens, though, no idea if I would rec them to an adult.
