I can live with fandom doing that, it's when the fucking CANON does it. I'm looking at you """"MJ"""" from homecoming.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-17 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yyyyeeeaaahhh, I get wanting a new spin on an old character, but MJ is supposed to be likeable and friendly as well as tough as nails. The utter lack of payoff for her character beyond a weak "reveal" didn't help matters.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-17 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I...think she's supposed to be shy and awkward at least among people she likes? The ending kind of ruins that, but I sort of got that vibe, and I'm hoping that's what they'll go for once she has a real plot point.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-17 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
There's awkward, and then there's just being a jerk. "Mj" crossed that line pretty quickly. Unless there's a deleted scene I missed, they really dropped the ball on her characterization. And since Infinity War is coming up, I'm not sure she's gonna get much screen time, since I'm genuinely worried Peter's not gonna last the movie.

They're not going to kill off the newly rebooted Spider-Man before getting at least one more standalone movie out of him, get real.

EFFY FROM SKINS

(Anonymous) 2018-01-16 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I have been turned off female characters from slash fanfiction (usually characters that I haven't gotten to in the canon yet). They are so smug and know-it-all. It is frustrating. I never want to use those characters in my own fic then. Fortunately, there are generally some other female characters who are generally ignored that I can use instead.

Hermione in Harry Potter fandom gets this. i mean she could be that in canon, but fanfic writers have a way of making her nothing but smug and obnoxious sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-16 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! She is smug and obnoxious sometimes, but not about people's relationships. She's not the most socially adept person.

YES YES YES YES.
I especially hate the whole smug, smirky bullshite, when they know their friend is crushing on someone and that person is crushing back but they 'won't say anything' and instead let both friends be miserable. Or make fun of them. BAH.

(fic!Natasha is the worst. Also Laura Hale in TW fic where she lives.)

The 'omg, i'm terrified of her' trope is similar and equally annoying.

hahaha, oh god, Natasha gets this SO BAD in like every single MCU slash fic ever. Even for pairings where it doesn't even make sense for her to be in that role!

Like, I've read probably a dozen Spideypool fics that are like "Spiderman rarely teams up with the Avengers and doesn't know them well." And then a chapter later there's Natasha rolling her eyes about how Spideypool is *obviously* in luuuurve with each other. Gosh, they must be really blatant about it for Natasha, a woman who never speaks to either of them and has spent all of ten minutes around them in the middle of an alien invasion, to figure it out. Except that can't be right, because literally no one else on the planet noticed their mad love affair. So either Natasha is fucking psychic or the author is just turning her into a Cool Girl who's Cool With The Gays because ???? Gotta have that author self-insert somewhere I guess???

It’s an easy way to score “I’m not just here for the cocks!!!” points to include Nat as the token chick.
soldatsasha: (Default)

[personal profile] soldatsasha 2018-01-17 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I suspect so, yeah.

Nat is always super "scary" and intense and knows everything. Also can't forget Pepper, who always has to show up in any MCU fic over 10k words so she can be "scary" because she's so beautiful and competent and nice. (Men are never scary, especially not people like Deadpool or the Winter Soldier. Unless it's a serious dramatic fic, in which case Coulson and Fury can be actually scary.)

Let's not forget overly-supportive canon token love interests (MJ, Jane, Sharon, etc.) who, ever since their amicable breakup with the MC, have always known that MC was gay/bi and they're just so gosh-darned supportive and happy that the guy they loved is now going to fuck another hot dude. But it's okay because canon love interest is focusing on their career right now and is so emotionally mature that they no longer feel any feelings at all.

I'm not in the MCU at all, so maybe I'm missing something, but this doesn't seem bad to me? I mean, if the canonical love interest is overly support to such an extreme degree that it's actually creepy and intrusive, then that's not great. But having the canonical love interest deal with a breakup with maturity and equanimity, showing them to be supportive of their ex's bisexuality, and showing them finding fulfillment in something other than a guy...those things seem pretty good to me.

I think it's just bad writing. I'm not sure we need to seek deeper explanations. It's bad writing that's trying to mirror common tropes of romantic comedies.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-17 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
YES that reeks of immature writing

(Anonymous) 2018-01-17 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
You said it for me. Most of the time when I read this in slash fic, the slash romance is already written as hugely OOC to begin with and feels written by someone who has never had a long term or messy relationship. Everything stays coloured inside the lines, cardboard cutout, nothing real about it.

Yeah, I hate when authors write like that too. Makes me feel like they're self-inserting so hard.

[personal profile] ninety6tears 2018-01-17 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
I haaate this trope, but for me it's not really about the character being a know-it-all as much as an OOC projection of everything revolving around the ship.

tbf that's pretty much canon MCU Natasha.
