Wait, I thought Vince was involved with the original X-Files run to the end as a writer/producer?

Also, when the reboot happened, he really wanted to be part of it, but his involvement with "Better Call Saul" prevented that from happening. I know it's only a 13-episode season, but based on the amount of prep work and writing he does for it, it's basically a year-round job for him.

That is to say: I reeeaaaaallly doubt this is true.

That said, if some years down the road (like after Chris Carter is dead and buried) he admitted to this being his thought process, it wouldn't entirely surprise me, either.

Vince strikes me as a genuinely good guy and career-wise he's very loyal to people he's worked with. He's repeatedly said that he owes his career to Chris and the X-Files.

I don't think it's just a question of integrity. The fact is that Gilligan had the advantage of making Breaking Bad in a world where the X-Files already existed. It's a lot easier for him to realize how difficult it is to keep making serialized dramas over a long period of time. He was able to see the ways that the X-Files (and a bunch of other shows) had failed.

I'm obviously ignoring the X-Files revival, but that's just because I don't see any reason to care about it at all.

Yeah, I agree. Gilligan had seen his first big show dribble off into nothingness and didn't want that to happen to a show he had more control of. If Breaking Bad had been his first big show, then maybe he wouldn't have had the experience to make that decision.

Not just dribble off into nothingness, but he was also unemployed for two years after it ended.

I recently saw an interview with him that he still has this paralyzing fear that if he takes a sabbatical and stops writing for awhile, he'll never be able to get back on the horse and create another tv show that people will like.

Oh, I didn't know that. Poor guy. His writing was definitely the best of the later seasons and he wrote my all time favourite episode, "Bad Blood".

lol Shows stay on as long as the fucking networks want them to stay on. Fox was going to bleed The X Files dry.

If Chris Carter didn't have so much control as to just end it, that at least would be an excuse.
