Nothing better than buying a book that's been highlighted and has dried boogers and food caked to the pages.

My suggestion would be, if you see a book for sale with food caked on it, not to buy that book.

I can't say too much. I just left a book I spilled orange juice all over in one of those take a book/leave a book boxes.

I love books with margin notes.

It really depends on the marker. Sometimes it almost makes books illegible.

I hate used books, tbh. I am very careful with my books. I like them to look clean and beautiful. I hate lending someone my book and seeing them break the spine, bend pages, reading while eating food and getting gross oil/food/whatever all over, and even writing... I actually read using bookmarks and enjoy them looking crisp.

I'm with you on this. I work in a shop that's part bookshop, and it's ridiculous how ham-fisted customers are with our books. Pick it up, crack the spine, tear the dust-cover, thumb the pages so hard that they go lumpy, put it back on the shelf. Getting a delivery of pristine, untouched books makes my day, even if I know they'll only stay that way for about 5 minutes.

I buy most books used because they're cheaper. New books can be like $10-$20, which is far too much for me. And a lot of books just aren't in print anymore, so you can't buy them new.

Obviously, I avoid buying books with crap all over them. Most used books seem to be in reasonably okay condition, though.

Many old editions are also extremely beautiful. I frequent used bookstores just to find nice ones to decorate my shelves.
