Things you'd rather buy used than new

A car. A couple family members tried to talk me into getting a new car but as I've said before, I don't care about cars. So I don't care about having the newest model or whatnot.

See I'm the opposite. I'd never buy a used vehicle if I could afford a new one. I've gotten burned way too many times before. You don't know what the previous owner did to the damn thing, what hidden problems it might have, whether or not it's been in an accident, etc. and *if* you're lucky enough to get some kind of warranty it's never as good as the warranty on a new vehicle.

For me it's not about getting the latest model, it's that I don't trust people to treat their cars well.

A house is the most obvious one. I think home construction turned to crap after WWII.

Some furniture - not upholstered things or cushions, but good hardwood furniture.

Old houses are almost always prettier, but honestly, I'll take central air any day of the week. Also, a lack of roaches.

Yeah, I’ve never found new furniture I really loved with the exception of novelty stuff (at some point I’m definitely gonna own a skull armchair.) And so many new houses seem like tract houses even if they aren’t.

Video games....sort of.

I agree if you mean like, old games. I still buy SNES games and such. It's fun to go through the discount bin.

But I'm not sure how I'd buy a modern used video game, since all the new games I buy are electronic downloads.

Nothing better than buying a book that's been highlighted and has dried boogers and food caked to the pages.

I hate used books, tbh. I am very careful with my books. I like them to look clean and beautiful. I hate lending someone my book and seeing them break the spine, bend pages, reading while eating food and getting gross oil/food/whatever all over, and even writing... I actually read using bookmarks and enjoy them looking crisp.

I buy most books used because they're cheaper. New books can be like $10-$20, which is far too much for me. And a lot of books just aren't in print anymore, so you can't buy them new.

Obviously, I avoid buying books with crap all over them. Most used books seem to be in reasonably okay condition, though.

Clothes. More interesting styles in charity shops and on eBay.

I buy clothes on eBay all the time! Now and then I get something it turns out I can't wear but mostly it goes well for me. I also use ThredUp.

I actually buy used shoes. I know you aren't supposed to buy used shoes but I actually tend to get more wear out of shoes I buy used than shoes I buy new.

With you on this. Most of my wardrobe these days comes from charity shops.

I buy a lot of used parts for work stuff. If I can visually confirm there's no problems with it, I mean. Most of our lighting rigs, ratchet straps, simple tools, stuff like that. But I only buy it from other people in the industry who are upgrading or cleaning out their shops or whatever, I don't trust random sellers.

This. If you prefer to buy your textbooks new, you must be rich :\ I wish textbook rental (with option to buy) were a big thing.

Reading this question made me realize there's basically nothing I prefer to buy used, in fact, I will go out of my way to buy pretty much anything new. I feel bad about it, in theory I'm extremely supportive of recycling and reusing. I just get grossed out by the thought of other people using my stuff before me. I know it's a horrible psychological hang-up and all in my head, but still. It's like, if my apartment is messy, at least it's my mess. Walking into someone else's messy apartment just feels more gross.

Maybe a leather couch? I know couches are usually high on people's list of things they don't want to get used, but when it comes to leather couches specifically, I just love how they look and feel when they've been used a lot. I vastly prefer a broken in leather couch with a great patina to a brand new, stiff, perfectly smooth leather couch.
