Chain restaurants.

Any particular faves?

Red Lobster! Love it. Olive Garden, too. I don't particularly like Applebee's, but's alright if I want somewhere to sit down.

For fast food I like Burger King, Wendy's, Freddie's, Panera (I know it's fast casual, but whatever) and all three of the major chicken chains if you can find one that tastes good (yes, they taste different depending where you go). The last Popeye's I had was so bad, OMG.

The only thing keeping me out of chain restaurants is that they seldom have vegetarian food. Back when I ate meat I liked them just fine.

WTF? I eat vegetarian at chain restaurants. The options are limited, yeah, but not nonexistent.

The quality, however...

I mean, unless you're not picky, then I'm sure it's fine.

Hence the bad reviews, I would imagine.

Maybe it's been too long since I looked at one! Usually I stick to IHOP.

I consider myself a hardcore foodie but there are some chain restaurants I'll cop to loving.

Eh? If they weren't popular, they'd go out of business.

OR GET REALLY BAD REVIEWS

Re: Things you love that aren't popular

Bad reviews doesn't mean nobody's eating there. They get bad reviews because the food is usually solidly mediocre and a little overpriced. But a lot of people still go for a number of factors, including but not limited to:

1) they're not that picky
2) they want something predictable
3) they're eating as a group and trying to find the least objectionable place, i.e. the lowest common denominator
4) they prize ambiance over cuisine (see: Cracker Barrel)
5) they don't trust mom and pop places in terms of cleaniliness and menu
6) ethnic chain restaurants like PF Chang's or Don Pablo's is more appealing to people who want to eat sorta-ethnic food without the danger of interacting with brown people

Ditto, they may not be fine cuisine but a lot of chain restaurants are still decently tasty (also I'll admit to some irritation when I see people talking about how chain restaurants are awful and why do people not go to smaller local restaurants not realizing that not everybody lives in a big city filled with a ton of small specialized restaurants, to say nothing about price).

I do think that we should keep in mind, however, that while this is true, it's kind of a, you know, bad thing about society that we should find outrageous and wrong

We'll make sure to add it to our lists.

Man, I'm on the road all the time and I eat at chain restaurants probably 90% of the time.

There's some towns where I've found decent local places, and there's some towns with absolutely amazing local restaurants. (Often where you don't expect a lot of amazing restaurants, like Springfield, MO.) But by and large there's not a lot to choose from. Probably half the local restaurants I've been to have been not so great. And when I look on Yelp most places I travel it's really common that most of the top restaurants are chains like Olive Garden and Red Lobster.

So, I'm firmly on the side of liking chain restaurants. The quality is consistent and they've figured out menus and restaurant designs that work well.

I tend to prefer independent restaurants, or very small chains, but I think big chain restaurants have their place, and I rarely find them genuinely bad. They're a safe bet.

My favorite big chain is probably Red Robin for burgers and (yam) fries.

Everybody seems to love Olive Garden and Red Lobster, but I can't speak to those, as I'm not even sure we have those chains up here in Canada.
