Same. It takes me at least twice as long as normal to watch anything because I have to keep pausing to psych myself up to watch what could possibly be an embarrassing thing, and what I consider to be embarrassing is a really low bar.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-19 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
same!!!

I think the worst thing about it for me is that like... the anticipation of something embarrassing happening, all the time where I'm watching a scene thinking of all the ways that the scene could go wrong and be embarrassing for someone - ends up being much more unpleasant for me than the actual embarrassment on screen. So I feel like it ends up magnifying the actual humiliation that's present on screen.

Same. And the worst is that a lot of the time, nothing embarrassing even happens. It just looks like it might.

I always spoil myself thoroughly before watching anything to help mitigate this problem but there's no real way to avoid it completely. And sometimes spoilers only make me think something embarrassing will happen but the execution was actually okay so I worried for nothing.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-19 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
yep. It's the worst and I kind of hate that I'm this way, I feel like such a weenie sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-19 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I definitely have different time constraints when it comes to watching or reading anything so I feel like I'm missing out in not being able to just binge watch in a day. I also can't watch anything with others. If I do, I have to get up and leave during any potentially embarrassing spots.

At least it's not weird in my family since my dad gets up any time there's potentially romantic stuff going to happen.

Oh my god yes. I have such secondhand embarrassment. I will mute the shit out of it and look away until it's over.

I used to think I wasn't too good at dealing with second-hand embarrassment in shows, but it turns out I am much better than my bf who literally squirms in his seat, makes discomforted noises and starts fiddling with everything the moment something humiliating/embarrassing is about to happen in a show.

But I get embarrassed really easy irl so I guess it evens out.

I have massive second-hand embarrassment

Even if it's just something I find embarrassing, not the characters

I don't generally think of serenading as humiliation except maybe for the one doing it if they're a bad musician. But in general I have a lot of trouble handling humiliation onscreen. I want to fast forward through it but I try not to do that on principle. (Not saying it's a good principle.)

If it was in public I would want to crawl in a hole and die if someone serenaded me. If it was in private I would probably just be like, "Really? Why are you doing this?"

(Anonymous) 2018-01-19 09:21 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, yes. Same for me. Just like proposing in public. I would totally say no just because of how embarrassed and freaked out I am by that - and really, a partner who would do that to me doesn't know me at all.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-19 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I used to think my second hand embarrassment was pretty strong, but it's honestly only a small fraction as strong as many of the people in this comm describe, so I guess I'm actually right in the middle.

And characters getting serenaded doesn't embarrass me at all. But then, it wouldn't embarrass me in real life, either.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-19 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Characters getting serenaded is embarrassing only if the the serenade-ee doesn't like it, and it's played as being awkward.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-19 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I actually cringe for the person serenading whoever, though. Like "WHY ARE YOU DOING THAT WHAT IF YOU GET REJECTED", with caps in mind. It doesn't even matter how the reaction is from the crowd/the target, I'm already embarassed for the person doing it.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-19 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
For me, it totally depends on the situation. If it's the kind of movie where the crowd is going to be all Awwww about it, I'm not embarrassed unless the singer is also really bad at it. In more realistic movies where most people are going to be pointing or staring... so much embarrassment.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-19 09:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was fine with it in 10 Things I Hate About You. With the band joining in, etc.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-19 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, my partner sometimes hides under the couch when something like that is happening in a movie or show cause he can't stand second hand embarrassment.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-19 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
Hahaha! My father does this thing where he pulls the neck of his shirt up to his forehead. Tbh, it kind of drives me crazy, because his OTT reaction makes it way harder for me to deal with my own discomfort. But I try not to bug him about it, because I know he can't really help it.

Oh god, same. Even in fic.

Especially karaoke where a character picks a song to ~express their feelings~ about another character. Or any kind of lap-dance or strip tease scenario.

GLEE WAS SO PAINFUL I HAD TO STOP WATCHING.
