hey, goffdamn contact the original author, tell them "You have an interesting idea, mind if I do my own spin on it?" They might be flattered, you both might make a new friend, either way, a conversation has been initiated about someone's fic. Fic authors like that. Other fic readers like to see those and sometimes participate in them too. As the other commenter said, no one is going to complain about getting two of something they love. OR you can try rewriting it so well that nobody notices it's a retread of someone else's idea.

Taking someone else's actual fic and, with permission, rewriting it your own way is a legitimate thing, it's called a "remix". It was pretty trendy for awhile, and there were actual fic fests based around the concept. All you have to do is make sure the original author is okay with it. ANd there are ways to ask without offending them.

Fandom's concept of diplomacy these days seems to be defined as "instead of learning how to pick your battles and word criticism so it doesn't hurt the other person's feelings, stay silent about anything remotely dissatisfying no matter how trivial and only acknowledge a fanwork exists if you can't stop yourself from showering it with glowing praise". Seeing a cool but unsatisfyingly executed concept and wanting to redo it your own way isn't a dirty secret you have to hide from the original author. As long as you're polite about it.

Unless, of course, you can't stand the fic and its author so much you don't want any public evidence you read the thing in the first place (especially if they're one of those oversensitive BNFs with an army of vicious fangirls who jump on the slightest criticism)...that feels like a whole other problem though.

sorry if this came off as cranky but a lot of fic authors get tired of struggling to get readers to engage with them, and it's partially because readers are way over thinking everything when simply interacting with the author and each other makes things easier.

this. I once loved someone's concept but really didn't like their telling of it. Contacted them, asked if I could do an mirror version of their story, they said sure and forty chapters later I finished with a lot of readers. Gave them credit for the idea and a link back to it and they actually promoted my story too. If you're going to share it with the public you need permission. If you're just doing it and keeping it to yourself than you don't.
