this. I once loved someone's concept but really didn't like their telling of it. Contacted them, asked if I could do an mirror version of their story, they said sure and forty chapters later I finished with a lot of readers. Gave them credit for the idea and a link back to it and they actually promoted my story too. If you're going to share it with the public you need permission. If you're just doing it and keeping it to yourself than you don't.
