Yeah, I don't find her super compelling except in the Captain America movies. Even in the Iron Man and Avengers movies she is pretty meh.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-26 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
weird, since the russos can't write her for shit, but okay.

She seemed written awesomely to me. :)

There's no reason that it couldn't be interesting. I mean, at the most basic level, all you're really doing is making a spy movie set in the Marvel universe.

My concern with a Black Widow movie is that I think there's a lot that a good team could work with to make a fucking awesome movie..... but that movie wouldn't fit well with what we've seen of the MCU.

They could really embrace the Cold War spy movie aesthetic thing (much like they've done with the 80s nostalgia). Go whole hog on the costuming and old tech and such. But her story is really fucking dark, in a real world sort of way. They managed to do the Winter Soldier stuff all right, but his backstory is still pretty superhero-ish. With Natasha they have to either go full on Manchurian Candidate (which people might like but Marvel then risks losing younger audiences) or they have to try and pretty it up. And if they do that they run the risk of smacking straight into that wall of cognitive dissonance that's already a threat to any superhero movie.

Plus there's the timeline issues. In the comics iirc Natasha was trained during the 50s or 60s. It made sense that she was this classic cold war spy who eventually converted over. And iirc she was enhanced like Steve and Bucky, so she didn't really age. But the MCU takes place *now* and we haven't been given any indication that she's been enhanced like that. So either she's got the same long backstory as the comics and totally failed to mention to fellow dinosaur Steve that she's fucking 70, or she's as old as the MCU would lead us to believe and Red Room happened in the 80s/90s, which doesn't work as well for a lot of reasons.

Just watch the Red Sparrow movie that is coming out. Black Widow movie without BW.

The Red Sparrow trailer looked really bad, though. :(

This is a really good comment, and I agree with all of it.
nightscale: Starbolt (Marvel: Captain America)

I like her and I think they could potentially do a decent movie with her, but there's also a lot of ways they could mess it up.

The whole spy-movie thing could work but it could also skirt towards being less family-friendly than the rest of their stuff so it could run the risk of loosing their primary audience.

As it is I'm good with her as a side-character and I think she works well as that, and we've got Captain Marvel coming up so I'm more keen to see how that turns out atm.

If they make one they need to do it with a younger actress and focus on her training. I don't want to see Scarjos dead eyed stare a whole movie.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-20 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not a fan of the actress. The movie is at least 3, more like 5 years too late (and even more overdue by the time it finally comes out).

AND I DON'T CARE.

I'm supporting it anyway. And I'm certainly not judging it before the script is even written.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-20 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Why? Why support a movie that isn't necessary with an actress you hate????

(Anonymous) 2018-01-21 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
1) I didn't say it wasn't necessary. I think it's very necessary, for representation of female superheroes if not, perhaps, for the MCU. It's also very overdue. If fucking Doctor Strange got a movie, Black Widow can too, TYVM.

2) I also didn't say I hated her. I said I'm not a fan. There's a difference.

There was already a Black Widow movie and it was called Salt.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-20 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I would've liked a Black Widow movie like 5 years ago. Now. . . not too interested.

I love her. And I think doing a movie with her backstory would be great. I think the actress could pull off something really good.

Agreed. Very much agreed.

Unpopular opinion but I'm really tired of the MCU films. I'm semi-looking forward to Black Panther but I'm so meh about everything else. I feel bad because I know MCU is a sausage fest and deserves better female films but I'm so burnt out on how samey they feel now.
meredith44: Natasha from Avengers in front of an explosion (Avengers Natasha explosion)

[personal profile] meredith44 2018-01-21 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
I would love a Black widow movie, but as others have said, it would be difficult to get right yet still feel like it fits in the MCU as it has been established. I would definitely see it if they made it, but IDK if it would live up to what I would want from it.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-21 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
I find it baffling that so many people are objecting to a Black Widow movie because they think her origin story would be hard to pull off in the MCU.

There's no reason for them to do her origin story for a theoretical Black Widow movie at all. She's been introduced. She's a known quantity. It wouldn't just be perfectly reasonable to give her a solo movie revolving around espionage or undercover work in the current era, it would make a hell of a lot more sense than going back to some nebulous past point to create a movie that adds no forward momentum to the MCU whatsoever.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-21 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
EXACTLY

(Anonymous) 2018-01-21 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. Any movie has the potential to be bad, including a Black Widow movie no matter how they do it, but if that were a reason not to make movies there would be no movies.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-21 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you're absolutely right that giving her a current era movie would make the most sense and work the best within the constraints of the MCU.

I also think that what we're going to get will probably be an origin story, or at best a "how adult Widow was recruited by the good guys" story. It's what they do. Every superhero solo movie has started out with the origin. Fuck, we've had how many Spider-Man reboots that have all started with the origin story now? And that's an origin story that everyone watching already knows.
