Favorite Non-Fast Food Restaurants

What are your favorite restaurants around where you live that aren't chains or fast food places? What do you like about them? What are the solid, reliable places you go to again and again?

There is this chicken place outside where I live. It is like...a restaurant/shitty grocery store. They have the BEST chicken strips and potato wedges I have ever eaten. Too bad it is in the middle of nowhere. :(

At local level, there's Vinci that serves primarily Italian. Located in Borås, Sweden.

Otherwise, I really liked KOKA or SK Mat & Vänner, which are Michelin star restaurants in Gothenburg. Especially the latter as we had a view of the kitchen.

There's a wonton noodle soup place near me that's realllly good. It's definitely nothing fancy, but the wontons and broth are all just really good, and it's very cheap, and open late, and it just really hits the spot, especially if you get the spicy beef soup.

There’s a really good sort of Asian-Mexican-diner fusion restaurant a few blocks from where I live; my go-to out of town company restaurant. And I just went to a little hole-in-the-wall place right next to the beach yesterday, it’s not groundbreaking or anything but well-made, cheap, and plentiful—I had leftovers for dinner—and they have lots of vegetarian options. There’s a Mexican place downtown with agonizingly slow service that can be circumvented by calling in a takeout order, because their awesome food makes it worth the hassle.

Nudo. It's a local Japanese food place that serves the most delicious food ever and has tonnes of options for vegetarians. I usually get edamame, garlic cucumber or lotus root starters to share, and then a main. Or just a group of small stuff for my main meal like spring onion pancakes and cucumber sushi.

There's a fantastic Indian restaurant called Asha in my town. Just awesome all round, amazing food, friendly staff and the place itself is gorgeous. Lamb baingan is my favourite, but the shobjee is great too. The last time I went there with my partner and a workmate of his, the waiter plonked down a tray of free drinks for us (Whisky/cognac for them, Bailey's for me). I started saying there must've been a mistake because we didn't order them, and he just laughed and said they were on the house. Just a lovely gesture.

There's also a burrito bar that does amazing fajitas. Super tasty and huge, I usually struggle to eat it all but it's so damn good. Sometimes they have random little extra bits on sale in a basket at the counter, like whole chocolate habaneros. Made the mistake of eating one whole on a dare, never again.

There's a bakery cafe that makes the best croque monsieur! And a hot chocolate so rich you can eat it with a spoon. Then there's the place where I love to get breakfast--fresh local eggs and peppered bacon, bread baked on-site, everything good...and the Chinese restaurant with the super-nice proprietor, where the spicy beef noodle soup is the perfect cold cure...for a modest-sized midwestern town, we have a lot of good restaurants.
