So one of my six year old hens hasn’t been doing well lately; up to a couple months ago she was top of the pecking order, but slowly she’s just gotten a bit weaker, although she’d still smackdown would-be challengers. When she was less than a year old, my mom found her hanging from our back fence by one leg, and she spent a couple weeks in the kitchen learning to walk again, and lost all fear of people. She’d come in the house and beg and in the morning she’d pace outside the back door yelling until we fed her.

Yesterday she laid a lash egg—a solid, egg-shaped pussball, the sign of an untreatable ovarian infection, but she seemed to improve afterwards, eating and clucking and following me around. This morning she was huddled on the roost with her eyes shut. She wouldn’t eat or drink. I bedded her down in the cat carrier on some old sheets and a couple big hot water bottles, and went to the nearest Women’s March. I just got back. And I have to bury her. I hate this.

That sucks. :( But at least you seem to love your chickens so she probably had a great life.

AYRT. Thanks. I love all my pets, I’m just down to one cat and a bunch of chickens. I hope nothing happens to my fuzzbutt for a long time; she’s the cuddliest cat I’ve ever had and the minute I sit down she parks herself in my lap. But she was three when I got her a few months ago; the chickens are always hard to lose because I remember when I could fit two in each hand. It’s one reason I adopted an adult cat. When I have to bury critters that I raised from babies it’s always an extra gut punch. Okay, time to break out the shovel and find an empty spot in the yard. *Sigh*

Oh, no, poor hen. I'm really sorry. :( You did all that you could for her and I'm sure she appreciated it. You've always sounded so well-informed and attentive in your comments about your chickens, so she must have been really well taken care of and led a happy, comfortable life. Sending lots of hugs to you. <3
