some older science fiction anime

Starship Operators is pretty neat, and not very long (thirteen 25-minute episodes). It's definitely more "television animation" than Ghibli-style animation; the ladies' uniforms are a little silly, I think. But it's serious, and not cutesy nor gory.

In that vein, I suggest you look into the Macross stuff, of which there is a lot, in different continuities. I really only know the first one, which was the stem of what was adapted into Robotech internationally, but the general thematic idea seems to have been reused a few times. (Thirteen-year-old me wants to tell you that the first series, SDF Macross, in either version, really is really good. It's melancholy, being a war story, but good. Middle-aged me hasn't seen it in a while.)

Haha, I'll take the 13 year old vs. middle age you viewpoints under consideration, thank you!
