What anime would you recommend...

(Anonymous) 2018-01-20 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
... for someone who has watched almost NO anime except for a few Miyazaki movies? I loved the animation in those, especially Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro. I've never really tried to watch any TV series because the plots seem all over the place. Bonus points for:

* beautiful animation
* interesting plots - I don't mind some WTFery, but I'd like them to make sense
* interesting settings: historical, fantasy/sci-fi

Do not want:

* porn, gore, anything super violent
* anything too cutesy or with plots where romance/romantic relationships is the main focus
* no high school settings

Man, putting us in a tough spot with "not too violent" but "not too cute!"

What is too violent?

I mean dark subject matter and fighting is fine, but I'm not really interested in graphic violence or gore, especially if it feels gratuitous or over the top.

Cowboy Bebop then. Great music, short series, and fantastic series/characters.

The "Toward the Terra" TV series is a space opera based on a manga written in the 70s, so it's super old school space opera. TVTropes summarizes the plot as, "In a distant future, humankind has destroyed the natural habitat of its homeplanet Terra and colonized other stars. Humanity is controlled by supercomputers, and children are born in test tubes and then handed to suitable foster parents. All children go through a psychological maturity check at the age of 14, where their unnecessary childhood memories are erased. The children, now blank slates for propaganda and brainwashing, are taken to space stations for further education. However, a new race of psychic humans have emerged from the maturity checks; they are called the Mu and and are considered a threat to the strictly controlled society. The Mu stay hidden, trying to rescue as many Mu children as they can, while they long to return to the fabled homeplanet Terra."

The character designs were moderned up a bit, and the second arc takes place in space school, but the whole thing covers about, oh, fifteen years? Give or take? It's been a while. There's a little romance, but it's far from the main focus. More a natural consequence of one of the settings being a generation ship.

The animation is a little dated because it's from 2011, but if you're starting with it it's not going to be terribly noticeable. It starts out as cheesy superhero fun? but gets a little dark towards the end. On the violence scale, I'd say it's more towards a Marvel movie than a Tarantino movie. The storyline is coherent and easy to follow, has two distinct but connected arcs. One that goes from episodes 1-13 and the second from 14-25.

My one warning would be to skip the first 5 minutes of episode 16 if domestic abuse bothers you, the scene that could have been told instead of shown as a character's backstory. Ever since the episode aired, I've skipped that scene and warned everyone because it can be a major trigger.

The setting on it's own is basically a Neo-Manhattam, but with the fantastical elements of superpowers, and some sort of weird retro look, with modern conveniences.

If it's at all possible, watch it on Hulu or Viz's website, because the Netflix version has stripped some elements within the show that are actually important to the plot and they skipped the after credit scenes.

Haha, thank you. NGL but I clicked on that link totally expecting to see an actual animated tiger and bunny, having adventures sort of like a Japanese Winnie the Pooh.

I think that was a common misconception when the showed first aired.

I realize this goes straight into the "romantic plot" thing, but... Romeo x Juliet is not "cutesy" in its romance, the plot is about pretty much everything else than Juliet's romantic woes, and it hits pretty much all the other points you mentioned. Just...don't even have the play in mind when watching because boy howdy is this a different beast. The plot also goes a bit funky towards the end.

Else... FMA never gets gorier than the intro and is a classic because it deserves it. The original Kino's Journey always had a somewhat Miazaki-esque feel to me, but it is a lot more cynical and the animation is obviously TV-quality. It's by nature episodic.

If you're willing to spend brain power on artsy stuff, then Revolutionary Girl Utena and Mawaru Penguindrum are both brilliant, but distinctively ANIME in their narration. Princess Tutu is cutesy but also hella funny and also hella lot deeper than the title would make you think.

Little Witch Academia might be up your alley? It's a little cutesy and is a school setting, but honestly feels to me like Harry Potter by way of Ghibli more than anything. It's all on Netflix!

Mononoke. (Not the Princess Mononoke movie.)
It's very beautiful. It has 4 or 5 different stories spread out over 12 episodes if I remember correctly. It's a mix of fantasy, mystery and a touch of horror (though not gory and all very stilised) in a historical Japanese setting (or rather several historical settings) and it's just amazing.

A movie I liked recently is Miss Hokusai - it's about the daughter of the famous artist and it's quite interesting.

some older science fiction anime

[personal profile] philippos42 2018-01-21 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Starship Operators is pretty neat, and not very long (thirteen 25-minute episodes). It's definitely more "television animation" than Ghibli-style animation; the ladies' uniforms are a little silly, I think. But it's serious, and not cutesy nor gory.

In that vein, I suggest you look into the Macross stuff, of which there is a lot, in different continuities. I really only know the first one, which was the stem of what was adapted into Robotech internationally, but the general thematic idea seems to have been reused a few times. (Thirteen-year-old me wants to tell you that the first series, SDF Macross, in either version, really is really good. It's melancholy, being a war story, but good. Middle-aged me hasn't seen it in a while.)

Haha, I'll take the 13 year old vs. middle age you viewpoints under consideration, thank you!

My immediate thought was The Ancient Magus Bride, despite the name romance is not really a focus (especially considering the magus in the title is a monster with a cow skull as a head). It's a very good fantasy series, the music and animation are lovely. The only warning point is it's based on an ongoing manga and it's unknown how the anime will tie off the series, but I find the plot so far easy enough to follow.

Shin Sekai Yori/From the New World might also be to your liking, it's based off an award-winning Japanese novel and the story is very strong. It has some violent moments but I wouldn't consider it to be over-the-top gore and nothing is gratuitous, even the violence is in support of the story.

For something slower, Haibane Renmei is haunting and fascinating. It starts out a bit slow and more slice of life but gets better as it goes. The story isn't the most straightforward but it's not what I would call confusing so much as thought provoking.

If you want something gentle, beautiful, bittersweet and reverent of nature in the way Ghibli films are, Mushi-shi is where it's at. Slow paced, episodic. A traveling doctor specializing in ailments caused by spirit-creatures visits villages helping people. On Netflix I think.

The Wolf Children - Solo mum with two special needs kids (they turn into wolves) moves out to the country. Utterly gorgeous animation and the plotlines *seem* like they should be quiet but I found them gripping. V. family oriented; little romance.

Princess Tutu - the Forces of Darkness arrayed against one ballet-dancing duck. Eh. Much better than that sounds. It mixes ballet and fairy-tales and magical girl tropes and meta-ey stuff and meditations on the nature of love and courage... on my regular rewatch list.

Have you seen When Marnie was There, The Secret World of Arrietty, the Castle in the Sky, or Howl's Moving Castle?

From Up on Poppy Hill was good. They are in school, but the main focus is the kids trying to save the building the different school clubs meet in and set during 1963. There was some romance though.

Samurai Champloo

So based off a quick wiki & my own summation, in an AU Edo era Japan, a ronin, a vagrant/wily sword for hire, and a young girl (~15? ~16?) end up crossing paths, and both men end up helping the girl find a mysterious stranger she insists exists whom she calls "a samurai that smells like sunflowers".

I enjoyed the the story, music (incorporates hip hop/Nujabes sound), and animation. Storyline focuses on the historical plot. It gets violent, but not something awful. There is a good amount of sword play...it gets dark and fucked up at the end...but I don't know. Maybe someone else can explain it better?

It is not a long series (about 26 episodes?) but its progression takes its time. One friend recommended it to me while another found it slightly tedious. I enjoyed it. The characters were intriguing, the side plots and adventures drew me in as well. I was sad it was over.
