Never take slash fandom as an accurate representation of what their series/movie/whatever is like. They're one and all REALLY talented at inventing alternate versions of everything to fit their shipping preferences, and often are incapable of grasping that those invented versions =! the real version/characters, and I say this as someone who enjoys me some slash fandom.

This is 1000% true. And I also love me some slash fandom.

I was in the Sherlock fandom for the several years that TJLC was a thing and like half the fandom had genuinely convinced themselves that Johnlock was endgame. I just read all the fic and kept my head down.

yup.

it's fun for sure but i mostly keep my head down and avoid the batshit circles that have convinced themselves that the fanon otp actually has any chance of being canon.

INCEPTION FANDOM. I went into the movie, expecting it to be some Arthur/Eames love fest but... they barely interacted and I'm not even sure they liked each other all that much? Arthur was a lot closer to both Cobb and Ariadne.

The weird thing about going from fandom to canon is when you realize how the canon characters are actually a lot more well-rounded than their fandom counterparts. Turns out Snape, Merlin, Sherlock and Loki aren’t actually interchangeable.
