Supernatural is pretty damn straight, always has been.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-21 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It is and was and always has been but the turning point where I realized that they were letting loose and having fun with subtext was "Cass, get out of my ass!"

(Anonymous) 2018-01-21 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Assuming you started with Season 1... yeah, well, I guess you've been spoilered.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-21 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
As far as I've seen all the Destiel shippers I've ever talked to thinks Dean is bisexual in canon. No one thinks he's gay because that's obviously not true.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-22 08:15 am (UTC)(link)
And there are a small (but vocal) subset of Wincest fans who think that being "soulmates" and brothers magically keeps Sam and Dean free from gay cooties, no matter how many times they do it in the butt.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-21 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
All the gay stuff is just fandom. No incest and Destiel is more bromance then romance.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-21 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I can see how you could think otherwise, since the crazy end of fandom is always shrieking about queer-baiting, but yeah. Hella hetero.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-21 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL. Better stick with fanon then. I like both ends, but they're not the same thing, no.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-21 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol You're not the only one, OP. The supposed gayness is one of the reasons I started watching it, but I soon realized the "gayness" is just people's own interpretation of the characters. Dean's definitely straight in canon (though that doesn't stop me from shipping Destiel), but the way the show plays with the subtext is fun.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-21 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Not a fan and don't watch it, but I heard they started deliberately putting in Cas/Dean suggestive scenes for the fanservice. In my opinion, no matter the intentions, if you put that stuff in there, it's canon and fair game. So if the series gives enough ammo for Dean to be arguably bi, then fans are free to have at it.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-21 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
It's more like they are having fun with the over the top fans. It's not a fan service. SPN is very self-aware and likes to poke fun at itself every now and then. There is no evidence of Dean being bi except in some fangurls wet dreams.

Never take slash fandom as an accurate representation of what their series/movie/whatever is like. They're one and all REALLY talented at inventing alternate versions of everything to fit their shipping preferences, and often are incapable of grasping that those invented versions =! the real version/characters, and I say this as someone who enjoys me some slash fandom.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-21 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
This is 1000% true. And I also love me some slash fandom.

I was in the Sherlock fandom for the several years that TJLC was a thing and like half the fandom had genuinely convinced themselves that Johnlock was endgame. I just read all the fic and kept my head down.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-21 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
yup.

it's fun for sure but i mostly keep my head down and avoid the batshit circles that have convinced themselves that the fanon otp actually has any chance of being canon.

INCEPTION FANDOM. I went into the movie, expecting it to be some Arthur/Eames love fest but... they barely interacted and I'm not even sure they liked each other all that much? Arthur was a lot closer to both Cobb and Ariadne.

There's stuff to work with fandom-wise, as in some pretty intense bonds that can work for shipping, but show!Dean is very straight yeah.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-21 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Having relatively recently hopped on the train as well, I think it's just the fact that there are several extremely intense emotional relationships between the main characters (who are all guys). It's the kind of thing that's easy to read romance into for some people. Combine that with the lack of similar strong male/female relationships (because there are no female main characters and many of the recurring ones have a tendency to end up contracting a bad case of death) and you have a recipe for "OMG IT'S TRUE GAY LOVE YOU GUYS"

I do personally like destiel for the record but I'm not holding my breath it'll ever be confirmed 100% canon, and I enjoy their weird relationship either way

(Anonymous) 2018-01-21 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much this. I love the intense emotional relationships and I do enjoy reading them as romantic at times, but there's just no way any of my slash ships are becoming canon and the het ships I had all sunk.
nightscale: Starbolt (Marvel: Black Panther)

[personal profile] nightscale 2018-01-21 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
+1.

The relationship between the guys is more than enough for shippers to work with but in the show none of those are meant to be anything other than platonic/familial. Doesn't mean you can't run with it in fanon, but the show will never go there.

Based on canon, Dean reads really heterosexual. I would like to point out / remind everyone that in the episode with the siren ("Sex and Violence," Season IV Episode 14), Dean's siren was a dude. The three other men in this episode who had fallen victim to the siren? Also straight dudes with wives. The fact that (supposedly) straight Dean had a male siren says a LOT. (He also rather blatantly checked out a soldier he passed on the street, rather than a pair of 1940s debutantes, in "Time After Time.")

(Anonymous) 2018-01-22 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, don't take out all my "Dean's just THAT repressed!" fun out of it now! The star crossed, tragic, "not ever getting canon" part is very important and appealing to me!

(Anonymous) 2018-01-22 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
He also seems pretty into Dr Sexy.

idk, I've always been able to buy Dean as super-repressing his slight bi inclinations.

The fans want those two gay so badly I'm surprised they haven't tried Anne McCaffrey's tent peg trick yet.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-22 09:33 am (UTC)(link)
Surely if you've heard of the fandom, you also know how crazy they are. I love the crazy sometimes, but don't dip too far into it or you'll catch it yourself. :p
