Not a fan and don't watch it, but I heard they started deliberately putting in Cas/Dean suggestive scenes for the fanservice. In my opinion, no matter the intentions, if you put that stuff in there, it's canon and fair game. So if the series gives enough ammo for Dean to be arguably bi, then fans are free to have at it.

It's more like they are having fun with the over the top fans. It's not a fan service. SPN is very self-aware and likes to poke fun at itself every now and then. There is no evidence of Dean being bi except in some fangurls wet dreams.

I see someone's not using their Destiel decoder ring.

I don't care about Supernatural, and honestly canon is a stupid idea anyway, but I kind of agree with AYRT - if it's in the show, it's in the show.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-21 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not in the show.

The post that I was replying to made it sound like there is stuff in the show, but the stuff that's in the show doesn't count because "they're just having fun with the over the top fans" and "poking fun at itself every now and then". That's the specific idea that I disagree with. If I'm misreading, then apologies.

nayrt and yes, this is exactly the case. They've added a bunch of more emotionally intimate scenes between Dean and Cas and the Cas record flat out said they added Dean/Cas stuff for the fangirls (he backtracked as I recall when they were then accused of queerbaiting). The stuff is definitely intentionally in there, and though the motives may be "poking fun" or to please slashers, it's in there nonetheless.

Just once, I would like to see a showrunner come out and say "even though we didn't set out to queer-bait, we realize that our actions had that effect, we were wrong, and we were sorry."

Instead, it's all backpedal and no-homo and "you must have known we were just kidding around, how could you seriously think that we would make the hero of an action show non-hetero?"

Not the same thing, I know, but on Hannibal, the conversation basically went, "We didn't set out to have these two dudes fall in love, but wow, the show just kind of went there, so we're embracing it."

How can you say they don't poke fun at themselves when they have had episodes based on SPN books and conventions? They had a couple not very attractive guys cosplaying Sam and Dean as part of the episode. SPN loves to make fun of itself. It's the creepy fangurls who take it too seriously.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-22 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt but that's not the point. The point is that, no matter if it's "making fun" or not, if it's in the series, it's canon. Something isn't less canon because the writers are having fun or joking around. It's canon material no matter what the reason.

I'm not denying that they poke fun at themselves

I'm disagreeing with the part where things in the series don't count because they're poking fun at themselves
