His adventures are OTT and larger than life, sure, but Indiana Jones the character isn't really a superhero. He's a fallible, vulnerable human being who happens to be smart, clever, and daring.

Who beats Nazi soldiers single highhandedly, Willingly jumps from moving trucks, finds the hole grail, beats deathtraps and never loses his hat while doing it? He's the smartest person in the room, the toughest person in the room, is a master archaeologist, ladies man, crack shot and expert witha bullwhip? No. Come on. The guys an over the top power fantasy. Not complaining, I love it, I just don't think there any stretch where you can say he's just your average joe. Guy is larger than life by design.

I agree that his adventures and the situations that he finds himself in are larger than life, absolutely. And I'm not saying he's just an average Joe. He's an adventure protagonist. There's a fantasy element implicit in the genre of adventure. Cool shit is going to happen to you.

But I still think that Indiana Jones, the actual character, isn't portrayed in a totally OTT way. He's a smart guy with a lot of determination who survives some crazy shit. He doesn't have superpowers. And: when he's accomplishing all the things that you list, he doesn't do it in a radically over the top way. Rather, he's portrayed as just a guy who happens to be smarter and tougher than average. He gets the shit beat out of him in a lot of fights, he stumbles at times, he gets outwitted, he gets beaten at times, he panics, he fucks up. He manages to win, but it's often absolutely by the skin of his teeth, or by luck, or by his wits or sheer grim determination, rather than by being inherently more gifted than his opponents. He's never invulnerable or unbeatable.

That's what I mean when I say that he's not OTT: the character himself isn't OTT even when his adventures are. And so it doesn't make sense to me to say that the problem with the Alicia Vikander Tomb Raider is that she's vulnerable and not OTT and larger than life, and particularly to do so by invoking Indiana Jones.

Agreed. I was surprised when rewatching Indiana Jones movies as an adult how often he needed luck and good allies on his side (the poisoned fruit he almost eats before Sallah happens to see its effects on a monkey and stops him is the most immediate example that comes to mind).
