Yeah, I have to admit that I really don't get the massive outrage. I could see being furious if they made things exclusively locked behind a paywall, but as long as you can also access the content by earning it through playing the game, I don't see the issue. Some people have plenty of time to devote to playing games. Other people don't have the same amount of time, but they do have money. As long as there are ways for both groups to get the same content via the method they choose, who cares?
