I agree, OP!

(Anonymous) 2018-01-22 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
The difference is that we're the ones getting fucked over instead of some randos in another country that we'll never see.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-23 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know about that. There's not any real outcry over Nestle stealing water from California during a drought. Even if they were an American company they probably wouldn't make that list since nobody seems to care.

Trust me, Californians cared enough. At least in my community.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-23 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
But the country as a whole didn't. The world as a whole didn't even when it was taking place around the world. And they're still allowed to operate in these places for some reason, and Nestle is still sold in California which means it's still bought.

I wondered if it got any coverage outside of California, honestly. The state is fighting back now.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-23 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
I think water issues are fundamentally really complicated and boring and hard to care about if you're not in a given area

(Anonymous) 2018-01-23 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, I was admittedly using vague terminology when I mentioned people in other countries, but it applies more locally too. If things are not directly affecting a person, their likelihood of actually caring is pretty small. EA's shenanigans directly affect the sorts of consumers that are internet savvy enough to vote for them as a shitty company in online polls. Consumers play these shitty games and feel ripped off, but how many people ACTUALLY felt the burn of Nestle stealing water except for some central valley farmers?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-23 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
And there's the "shorts-sighted and ignorant" OP was talking about.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-23 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
For me with Nestle I try to avoid buying from them but they own so many other brands that it's difficult and when I try to tell other people about it they just kind of roll their eyes like "no ethical consumption under late capitalism lol". And I don't know if calling my senators will have any more effect than a personal boycott. I care about Nestle and other awful companies but at this point I feel powerless to fight them tbh.

Worst gaming company or worst company in general?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-23 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Came here to say this. I'm active in a few gaming communities and it's pretty clear in discussions that even if they don't specify it's the worst gaming company, that's what they mean. Hence comparing it directly to other gaming companies.

It's also weird to me that OP specifies companies in the United States because that's kind of a grey area. Lots of companies have their headquarters there but all the manufacturing and often the design stuff happens elsewhere.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-23 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
No, it's been rated as the worst company overall in the entire nation by some consumer magazine.

It's hyperbole, but you're right. It's stupid and annoying.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-23 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
That's gamers for you - lacking any sense of proportion.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-23 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
It isn't the gamers saying it though. It's business professionals (and yes I know there's some overlap but not THAT much overlap to the point where it would influence decisions like rating them the worst company in an entire country).

(Anonymous) 2018-01-23 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know what rankings we're talking about? But I looked at the one that got posted ITT, and it looks like it's based on a popular vote, not on anything with business professionals.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-23 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
In that case, maybe it's more about them acting "bad for their own business" rather than "unethically"?

Business professionals have a tendency to see things through the economic feasibility lense, which means that "This is a bad company" translates to "Their way of operating is running them to the ground." To cite the example of Nestlé stealing water, that behavior might be far more appalling but ultimately, their image hasn't suffered, while EA managed to alienate their customers.

If this is the case, I def agree

(Anonymous) 2018-01-23 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I have to admit that I really don't get the massive outrage. I could see being furious if they made things exclusively locked behind a paywall, but as long as you can also access the content by earning it through playing the game, I don't see the issue. Some people have plenty of time to devote to playing games. Other people don't have the same amount of time, but they do have money. As long as there are ways for both groups to get the same content via the method they choose, who cares?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-23 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I agree.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-23 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
While gamers tend to overreact I do think there is a point with loot boxes being linked to gambling and exploiting children and teenagers is a pretty big deal that needs to be addressed and looked into after so many years. Ofc probably most of the gamers whining are probably overlooking that fact and more about shitty releases, micro transactions, on disc dlc, etc.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-24 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Even so, it's still nickel and diming people while other companies are literally killing people.
