Given that fire is such a destructive force, I'm not surprised that it is mostly a power for villains. Other than warmth, what positive trait does fire have?

True, but ice and lightning-based magics aren't exactly cuddly either.

Fire is used to cook. It gives light in the darkness. Like you say, it's warmth. Even a forest fire has a positive side in that many plants and other organisms have evolved to use fire as a means of seeding, spawning, and spreading.

Honestly any fantasy story that uses the traditional four elements but puts all the evil on fire and all the glory on water when water is just as destructive annoys the fuck out of me.

as someone that lives near the ocean with a long line of ancestors that did as well - water is fucking terrifying and anyone that doesn't think its the most dangerous element is out of their mind. At least fire will go away at some point. Water is forever and it is bottomless.

I agree extremely, extremely intensely

Warmth. Light. Energy for doing things like cooking, or heating water, or powering machinery. Little things like that.

I'm now flashing on the 'what did the Romans ever do for us' scene in Life of Brian....

Fire can also be symbolic of humanity's enlightenment. The discovery of fire was a huge turning point in our cultural development as a species; mythology often reflects this.

Also, fire is sort of associated with the sun, which is a pretty big deal

Fire is also a cleansing tool, if used properly. When a region is filled with dead trees and other mast, fire removes these dead things and makes way for the new. It also can be used to destroy dangerous things that cannot be destroyed otherwise. Using fire just for evil destruction is merely a surface level use.

It's also *literally* cleansing - run a blade or a needle through fire, and you can use it for field surgery with far fewer worries about infection. or use fire to boil water to make it safe to drink.

plus fire can be a tool of making - metal forging, fire-hardening leather armor, burning designs into hardwood...
