I love this movie too. But I'm confused about not rooting for the protagonist. I think it's easy to root for Riddick. There are definitely worse assholes than him.

That's not enough for a lot of people. A lot of people need someone who is actually a decent person. Personally, I can't stand, for example, heist or gangster movies, because it is less a matter of good guys vs. bad guys and more bad guys vs. worst guys.

But I don't think Riddick does anything even by this metric. I also don't care for gangster flicks or morally grey characters. Riddick really doesn't do anything that's really grey. He's not an upstanding character but I don't see him as someone you can't root for.

I root for Riddick, he's awesome.

Whooo! Riddick is awesome. He isn't a *good* guy, but he's not like - evil, either. No worries about rooting for him.

Pitch Black or Chronicles of Riddick! The first movie was awesome and my ideal of horror SF. The second one was...a different thing, but still fun.

I love Riddick. He's a great protagonist because he finds his better heart and a more righteous path despite his crappy background and all the shit he's gone through.
