Is there slash potential in this show? I had been mildly interested, but then heard about the whole fiasco where the male creators went out of their way to brag, multiple times, about how not-gay it is and kept comparing it to Yuri on Ice, which was too gay. Or something like that. That may have been blown out of proportion, but principles aside, I am really only interested in anime if there's slash, sorrynotsorry.

OP
There is SO MUCH slash potential in this show. (And a bit of femmeslash potential later on)

I don't know about the anime staff, but isn't the mangaka a woman?

What really? The creators said that? Wow. I didn't know about that as I never was all that interested in the show.

A 30-second google isn't finding me a source, but I heard about the controversy from multiple people so it must have been around fandom anyway. Apparently the anime creators - I guess when promoting Welcome to the Ballroom? - were talking up the series as not being gay like Yuri on Ice. Apparently, it's not even a case of them being asked about Yuri on Ice (because I could understand getting annoyed if everyone else was constantly comparing your anime to another), they would bring it up on their own. Sort of in a "Yuri on Ice is good but too much about a gay love story" way.

Someone else told me that the anime was made even more, uh, heteronormative(?) than the manga because in the manga, sometimes the women lead the dance but the anime changed it to always be guys. No idea on the accuracy of that.

So anyway, if there were homophobic jabs made, I don't know, and it probably doesn't reflect the views of the original manga author even if there were.

The producer and the director.

They keep bringing up on interviews how their show wasn't like YOI and how YOI was too gay, even when the interviwer didn't mention YOI at all.

Wow that's ridiculous.

Yup, and saying things like "We don't rely on gay storylines to draw an audience," which is rich, considering YOI is one of the best-selling anime of all time now, and WttB is...decidedly not.

Hint: if it were just the ~gay storyline~ that got them viewers, it wouldn't be nearly this popular, as not even the best-selling BL anime of all time made anywhere NEAR the dent YOI has.

That's not to say the homoromantic content isn't a big part of the splash it's made, but it was crazy popular before episode 7 was even a glimmer in fans' eyes.

The director's comments definitely sound like they are salty AF that their show hasn't capitalized on riding on YOI's coattails like the thought it would.

The only reason the show had so much hype before it even began was the gay shipping, Dory.
