Would soaking in a hot bath work the same way hot compresses do? Also, if it doesn’t come to a head before Monday, skipping work for the doctor sounds like a good idea, if only because spending half an hour in a work bathroom with the first aid kit cleaning it if/when it pops would be awful. Good luck.

DA, but probably not, 'cause you want the compresses to be a.) as hot as you can stand them (not good for full-body baths) and b.) applied with a bit of pressure. So it is in the end easier just to lie on the unaffected side and keep switching them out. Annoying, but the best option.
