(Potentially gross but minor medical stuff. Abscess advice?)

[personal profile] syncing_feeling 2018-01-28 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
This weird, huge and incredibly painful lump just turned up on the side of my hip. I'm thinking abscess because it's so red and hot to the touch, and even my clothing lightly brushing it makes me want to cry. I've been doing the whole routine of hot/moist compresses to try and clear it, but it's just getting bigger. >:[

I'm working Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday so won't have time to get to a GP til Thursday. Sleep is a nightmare because even lying on my back/opposite side there's still just enough pressure on it to keep me awake. Advice, FS? I've been Googling but everywhere is just saying hot compresses, and no dice there. Grumble.

Keep doing hot compresses. As hot as you can stand. Sounds like a boil.

:( I will. Thank you. I feel so gross.

Keep with the hot compresses. If it's getting bigger, it sounds like it might be coming to a head, which you want so it can open and drain. If it hasn't opened by Monday and you can take a sick day, go to the doctor to get it lanced so you can sleep. Whatever you do, don't try to lance it yourself because that's a good way to give yourself a really horrific infection.

Thank you. Yeah, I hope it getting bigger is just a precursor to it opening so I can sleep, lol. I haven't taken a sick day at this job yet so hopefully my boss will give me a bit of slack for it if needed.

Ugh, I hate those damn things. I get them on my boobs or around the crotch region and they hurt like hell. Hot compress and wait till it pops, which it will usually do on its own, eventually. When it does, gently squeeze as much goo out as you can (which will also hurt), wash it with mild soap and water, dab some antibiotic ointment on it and put a light bandage over. Repeat as long as it's still open, because those little bastards can re-infect and swell up all over again. :(

Or if it's really big, your GP can lance it. I've also had that done and it's not fun but it works and at least it'll be safer than trying to do it yourself. My GP also gave me a prescription for antibiotics to take.

Thank you so much, and I'm sorry you suffer with them as well! I had a couple smaller ones in the exact same spot on the other hip a year or two ago and a large one on my inner thigh (which ended up popping by itself an hour before my appointment and I had a little happy cry). :( I just feel disgusting right now, I don't get why I keep getting them. I shower every day (sometimes twice if work has been really busy/dirty) and they always come in around the hip area. Ugh.

Thanks again for the advice. I think my partner thinks I'm exaggerating it but oh my god it's so uncomfortable.

NA

I started getting recurrent abscesses as complications from diabetes. I'd get a pimple and because my skin couldn't heal right from high blood sugars they'd inevitably turn into boils.

They really had nothing to do with cleanliness. Might suggest your doctor run labs to test your blood sugar if you have the insurance for it.

Would soaking in a hot bath work the same way hot compresses do? Also, if it doesn’t come to a head before Monday, skipping work for the doctor sounds like a good idea, if only because spending half an hour in a work bathroom with the first aid kit cleaning it if/when it pops would be awful. Good luck.

DA, but probably not, 'cause you want the compresses to be a.) as hot as you can stand them (not good for full-body baths) and b.) applied with a bit of pressure. So it is in the end easier just to lie on the unaffected side and keep switching them out. Annoying, but the best option.
