Oh, damn, that sucks :(. Sending good wishes and thoughts to her and the family.

Yes, of course, shipping fictional characters is exactly the same as fetishsizing people! /s

Are you also implying you're not like other girls (or guys) who are into slash, because your shipping and reading fic doesn't involve fetishsizing anyone, unlike everyone else who also reads fics and ships?

DA

So?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, but at that point, it's just the same as wishing that more people in fandom shared your interpretation of the canon in any other way.

Which, fair enough if it's just that, but the people who talk about it always seem to give it much more weight and significance than that. "Majority of fandom won't let men have close friendships" doesn't seem like the way you'd talk about something like that.

"more"

I'd take any at this point.

Wedding craziness

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I was reading this post on reddit from r/JustNoMIL and found this post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/JUSTNOMIL/comments/7tibft/my_mostly_mildlyno_mom_may_have_just_turned/

While I sympathize, there are so much WTFs in this. $20,000+ budget for a wedding?? I know there are people who spend even more than that, but honestly, if someone not coughing up 2K is going to put your plans in jeopardy, your wedding is too expensive and you should've planned something you could actually afford. And who the hell dreams about their bridal shower since age 14? JFC. If someone I cared about didn't have anything bigger or more ambitious to look forward to than a freaking bridal shower, I'd feel so bad for them.

Good lord. Don't do this to yourselves, people-who-want-to-get-married. It's one day out of the rest of your lives. Unless you're independently wealthy, it's insane to drop that much money on a big party that I promise you, most people will only enjoy moderately.

she said in an interview that fantasy and sexual and/or romantic writing were incompatible; her exact quote was "you can't have sex in front of unicorns" which I was annoyed enough by to write fic where that's exactly happens.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but I thought that too before I even read the secret. But then it didn't make sense. Child soldiers?

Re: Is there anything "good on the internet, these days?"

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
So we shouldn't grant it any more credence than that, and should recognize that it's just a sneer word.

Re: Would you want to be a BNF?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, this. I just want to write stories, be they fanfic or original, that people hopefully enjoy. And I know it's very tough for writers to achieve this, but any original stories I wrote, I'd like to be successful enough to where I could make an okay living for myself from those, too.

But that's it. I don't need the popularity or fame aspects at all. Too much pressure.

I love weddings, but the most fun I ever had at one happened to be a low-budget one.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm not OP, but I think a lot of commenters in this thread are missing the spirit of this secret. I've experienced going from a small fandom to a larger one and all of sudden realizing - "Holy shit, I wasn't a bad writer, there just wasn't much interest in what I was writing!"

I mean, saying "fandom sucks!" was harsh, no doubt, but can you maybe understand the disappointment of getting little feedback and realize why OP would feel vindicated in their new endeavor? Can you understand that a lot of fic writers do feel like they're shouting into a void, and why they would be happily surprised when they move on to something that yields emotional or even lucrative returns?

I'm not complaining because fandom feedback is what it is, but the reaction in this thread is a bit puzzling for me as a writer who's experienced what OP experienced.

Agreed. It's already a bit fucked up that the only queer relationship we see even hinted at in 7 books involves an evil dude and ends so badly that the other guy doesn't have another relationship in 50 years. But it could have been much, much worse.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Then what are we supposed to call the people who pitch fits over the existence of characters and plots that aren't 100% morally pure? Childish idiots?

Re: Is there anything "good on the internet, these days?"

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Just curious, have you ever used a sneer word for a group of people you disagreed with?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah. Thank you. :)

http://chocolate-frapp.livejournal.com/2012/09/28/ I Little Porny, Fucking Is Magic. House and Wilson having naughty fun in an amusement park, guess which cartoon gets referenced? NC-17. Like you couldn't tell that from the title.

I'm fetishizing your strawman right now. Oh, baby.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT - Fiction and non-fiction writing are very different skillsets. Certainly, some people can do both, but some people can do ballet and swing. Does an essayist have to worry about character arcs and worldbuilding? Does a fantasy author have to remember to reiterate their key thesis in the last chapter of their book?

Re: Op

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe try reading friendship fic instead of slash fic? Or starting a community for a friendship as opposed to a relationship. I think you'll find that many people do like the friendship, they just don't necessarily have a place to appreciate it vocally.

A lot of fandom trends have to do with finding like-minded people who will encourage each other and write fic or host communities or have discussions about characters in any way, shape or form they're interested in. This sadly also leads to things like shipper wars or gen fic vs ship fic, but it does allow for different appreciations of characters or pairings to flourish.

I'm fucking jealous of you, anon OP. :\

I try not to, and I don't expect people to take it seriously as a thing if I do.
