I'm not fond of this, either. I recognize that to a certain extent, it's exactly what shippers do, period. Oh, did two people exchange a millisecond glance from across the room in the two scenes they have together in the entire movie? It's shipping time!

I try not to begrudge slash shippers this because there's a real dearth of gay relationships in mainstream media. At the same time, I agree it's sad that close male relationships are rare to see unless they're butched up ("no homo!") so that people who want to see more gay relationships don't have a lot to choose from.

My God. How dare people think two characters have chemistry or might have an interesting dynamic in a relationship. Even if it's only based on a two millisecond glance. CALL THE FANDOM POLICE.

Wait. Call the thought police.

And if it effects how people write their characters then it has everything to do with the writers homophobia. Fuck them.

Are you truly that oppressed by me not being fond of something? Keep in mind that's the harshest thing I said about it, and that I never once suggested that people who enjoy it should stop, nor did I propose to try and stop them myself, or change their views. This seems like quite the hilarious overreaction on your part.

No, I just think you're an idiot.

Lacking the good opinion of someone who equates a difference in media preferences with being oppressed by the fandom police stings a lot less than you might imagine.

Setting aside everything else, it's not like the existence of shippers takes the platonic interpretation away from you

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
No, but if you interact with the fandom in any capacity or read fanfic, that interpretation is unavoidable.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, but at that point, it's just the same as wishing that more people in fandom shared your interpretation of the canon in any other way.

Which, fair enough if it's just that, but the people who talk about it always seem to give it much more weight and significance than that. "Majority of fandom won't let men have close friendships" doesn't seem like the way you'd talk about something like that.

"more"

I'd take any at this point.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-29 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
How dare other people think that a fictional character could possibly be gay.

How dare.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure. I don't believe I claimed otherwise?
