I'm not fond of this, either. I recognize that to a certain extent, it's exactly what shippers do, period. Oh, did two people exchange a millisecond glance from across the room in the two scenes they have together in the entire movie? It's shipping time!

I try not to begrudge slash shippers this because there's a real dearth of gay relationships in mainstream media. At the same time, I agree it's sad that close male relationships are rare to see unless they're butched up ("no homo!") so that people who want to see more gay relationships don't have a lot to choose from.

Keep in mind that's the harshest thing I said about it, and that I never once suggested that people who enjoy it should stop, nor did I propose to try and stop them myself, or change their views. Which, fair enough if it's just that, but the people who talk about it always seem to give it much more weight and significance than that. "Majority of fandom won't let men have close friendships" doesn't seem like the way you'd talk about something like that.
