There's a happy medium I think, I don't think people shipping m/m ships because they like the idea of them or think it's fun is an issue at all, that's what fandom is for so go for it.

Shippers gonna ship and all that and as a shipper of pretty much everything I can tell you that m/f shippers are exactly the same in regards to 'these two are awesome fiends, they'd make a fun ship'. Same for femslash shippers too.

Plus considering how much media has m+m friendships being The Most Important it's not really surprising that shippers get drawn to that and build something off of it, you're literally being spoonfed shipper fuel so ofc people are gonna eat it up.

But the people that cry 'queerbaiting' because a pair of same-sex friends are close or friendly towards each other(hell they don't even have to be friendly, just interact or stand next to each other and it'll be called 'baiting') do annoy me because you know what? Two guys being friends isn't bait, it's normal human interaction and it's fine if you ship it but it is on your own head to know that it's not likely to actually happen.

(And don't get me started on the people who cry 'queerbait' because their pet ship isn't canon when the canon in question has actual LGBT characters and pairs in it, that shit is fucking infuriating and transparent as hell).

There is also something to be said for how mainstream media writes m+m, f+f and m+f friendships and how they are treated differently as far as potential romantic entanglements go, and frankly mainstream media has far more of an issue letting m+f pairs be friends at all.

The whole thing is a lot more complicated than 'this is always bad' tbh.

Standing ovation for this comment. I agree with every point in it.

Literally chuckling out loud at "spoon-fed shipper fuel." It's so accurate I'm dying.

Spoonfed, handed to fandom, it all comes to the same thing really. :P

A lot of media makes m/m shipping very, very easy, and m/f as well tbh it just depends if the canon ship works for you is all.

"And don't get me started on the people who cry 'queerbait' because their pet ship isn't canon when the canon in question has actual LGBT characters and pairs in it, that shit is fucking infuriating and transparent as hell"

This sounds HILARIOUSLY terrible, which fandom is doing this?

Kara/Lena shippers in Supergirl fandom, or at least I would routinely see 'this show is queerbaiting with K/L' type posts in the Sanvers tag, y'know the actual canon LGBT f/f ship, to try and drum up support and when pointed out that the show does have canon rep they would try to argue why Alex/Maggie 'wasn't good enough' as if that would make us sympathetic to their plight.

Just say it wasn't the ship you wanted and be done with it.

And Sterek is another example, now this one is messy because the PR team was a sack of shit and kicked the goddamn hornets nest of fandom, but I legit saw people claiming queerbait when Danny, the actual gay-character on the show, got a boyfriend and some make-out scenes(and that's when I peaced out of ever checking that fandom again because the fuck).

It's not some huge issue, but I do see it sometimes and it's annoying, plus y'know, stupid as fuck.

Okay, but how many of those fandoms criticized for queerbaiting have "actual LGBT characters" who play more than a supporting role in canon?

Which is a point, except that those fans never try to argue for greater screentime or plots for those characters and instead focused solely on their non-canon ship instead, like I get that you don't always jive with a character but if you really, really care about LGBT rep then surely you'd focus your efforts on getting that character their fair due?

But most of the time it's just shippers wanting their ship to be canon, which isn't the same thing.

This. I would do a hell of a lot less slashing of male (and female) best friends if my fandoms actually had any LGBT characters in them.

Word to this. When I try to think of fandoms with lots of f/f ships I immediately think of Sailor Moon and MLP:FiM, two shows that put a LOT of focus on the f+f friendships.

Of course, it also helps there's a lot of female characters in the first place...
