129 Who is the target demographic for toy sales? (THINK REAL HARD)
138 LOL, that picture is hilarious! And I just bought the Bandai dvd. I've never watched the show before besides the last two episodes (well, and I was on /m/ during the show's run in Japan, so I know what happens in every episode without having seen it). It's ok but I don't see the big deal. Not even close to being my favorite GAINAX work (not even in the top 5).
151 HOLY SHIT YOU WIN TEN INTERNETS!!!!
168 When I watched this movie all I could think of was psychological ramifications of birth order, and how much each brother corresponded to one of my sisters and I (I'm totally like Owen Wilson in this film, I mean, as he relates to his family anyway).

OPINIONS LAWL

It's honestly much better to Gunbuster and Diebuster even if it is indeed inferior to End of Evangelion and FLCL. The writing is top-notch in terms of delivery, dialog construction and structure and the overall visual design is excellent.

I love Gunbuster, but the show is honestly terribly overrated. A few sequences in the final few episodes showcased excellent direction Anno would bring to flourishment in Evangelion but there's nothing about it that elevates it to the status of an enjoyable show with an excellent conclusion.

Re: 139

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I was only stating my opinion. And I never brought Gunbuster up by name either (I still think it's better than GL though, just on character designs alone).

I never found the appeal behind Mikimoto's design myself, they're very stiff and don't translate finely to animation. On old-school shows I tend to appreciate the more expressive approach of Osamu Dezaki’s productions or Miyazaki’s Future Boy Conan.
ext_81845: penelope, my art/character (general concern)

Re: 139

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
I never found the appeal behind Mikimoto's design myself

Because people look more realistic and more like real human beings as opposed to plush dolls. Same reason why I like Yas so much. I don't see his designs as being stiff either. I feel more emotion conveyed in his designs than someone who draws a more plain and cartoony style. I cried buckets during the final scene of Gundam 0080 partly because when I looked at Al's face I saw a child crying, and not a drawing representative of a child.

Because people look more realistic and more like real human beings as opposed to plush dolls.

If I wanted realism I wouldn't go for big eyed humans with chipmunk noses but rather for modern designers in the line of IG’s Nishio or Inoue. Not to mention drawings are not supposed to represent reality but rather to enhance it and Mikimoto’s acting does nothing for me. I suppose it’s a matter of taste.

129. So girls don't play with toys? Or girls don't play with toys because no one can be assed to market toys for girls that aren't pink and teach them how to be good mommies?

Re: 129

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Boys' parents are more likely to buy toys. I'm not saying it's right to market films and toys mostly to boys, or that girls don't play with toys (I wanted He-Man action figures as a little girl, did I get them, NO). I'm saying that these people study trends and do whatever makes them the most money.

That doesn't mean we don't have a right to be upset, or oppose these practices on the grounds of unintended social consequences, though.

Just curious, where did you hear that particular statistic? Because if anything was proof of institutionalized sexism in our society, that'd be it right there.

of course if this is just your personal experience, n/m.

I NEVER SAID INSTITUTIONALIZED SEXISM DID NOT EXIST IN OUR SOCIETY. THAT WAS MY POINT. THAT IT DOES.

I have a minor in Women's Studies, I took several classes dealing with this sort of thing. I'm just stating the reality of the situation and trying to explain why companies feel they have to market their shit the way that they do.

Re: 129

[identity profile] dwinghy.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
But you're making it sound like girls, on average, receive less toys than boys do, which I kinda doubt. But again, if you could point me to a source for that stat, I'd be very interested in reading it!
ext_81845: penelope, my art/character (disgruntled napoleon)

Re: 129

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
Girls receive less toys that are spinoffs of movies, because toys from things that are licensed tend to be geared towards boys. The only exception to this rule I can think of is that sometimes when there is a movie with cute animals in it, there will be a few stuffed animals from the movie (like Finding Nemo) that parents buy for girls.

Stuff like Barbie and Bratz -- the toys are manufactured first and then a tv show or cartoon or whatever is made to sell the toys.

Just walk into a Toys R Us or any place that sells toys and look in the action toy aisles. Everything you see is usually merchandise spun off of a movie or tv show. Not so much with the "girl" toys.

Um, children?

And speaking from experience how boys don't really give a flying fuck whether or not they're playing as a girl or a boy just as long as it's really really awesome?

As I've seen little boys decide to be ninja princesses. Hell, I think it'd benefit both boys and girls to see a girl up there kicking ass and taking names.

Re: 129

[identity profile] lolwahtradio.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Icon love. LOL.

Um, there is a reason the TV Networks are so interested in what genders watch their shows. They're called Demographics, and Marketing and Advertising is very interested in it all. It's not so general as you would think it is. They split everything up and focus on what age groups and genders that movies and TV shows will appeal to.

/I don't exist according to advertisers, I'm a girl who likes sci-fi and video games.

Re: 129

[identity profile] nailbat.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks. XD

I honestly don't know where they get their statistics on which genders watch which TV shows. I can sit my class down for a movie and all 15 out of about 25 boys will watch (and vote for) Bratz, care bears and Strawberry shortcake, while my girls will be perfectly content watching Power rangers and Nija turtles all day long.

Maybe I just got an extra special class. XD

Re: 129

[identity profile] lolwahtradio.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I have a friend who works in advertising, has to record all the survey responses and other input, and some of it, is.....pretty stupid. Cause some people just write down anything on those surveys, LOL. But that's how it works. It has nothing to do with sexism, it's just about what makes money.

And the Advertisers for childrens shows believe that boys will buy more action figures. Advertisers will pay more for shows that appeal to guys. *shrugs* I think the way they do TV ratings all out dated, as well, anyways. XD

This was my point. It seemed like the OP of 129 wanted an answer, so I provided one.

Of course, the way that people raise their children has more to do with it (if more people bought "boy toys" for their girls, things would be different). It's evidence of a larger problem than just OMG CORPORATE AMERICA.
