Imagine watching shows for the slash potential instead of the plot. Honestly, mainstream tv is table scraps if you're really looking for gay stuff. When the last time there's been popular show with a gay lead? Read gay lit or webcomics instead.

In that case, Shadowhunters? There really isn't a lead, it is more of an ensemble. But two of the main characters are LGBT (gay and bi).

Shadowhunters, Alec and Magnus.

Legends of Tomorrow, Sara Lance.

Brooklyn nine nine, Ray Holt.

Wynonna Earp, Waverly and Nicole.

Glee had Kurt and then a bunch of other characters that came out as LGBT, ran for several seasons and was hugely popular all while this was common knowledge.

Sense8 ran for two seasons with 4 main LGBT characters from the get-go.

And I know there's more I don't immediately know of.

Yeah, but Captain Holt definitely isn't. Jake gets most screen time and plot than everyone else.

I mean, Holt is an awesome character and I love him, but he's not the lead, he's a second-tier character.

Brothers and Sisters: Kevin and Scotty, Uncle Saul (5 seasons)
Sons of Anarchy: Venus and Tig (7 seasons with their story starting in 5), Agent Stahl (Seasons 1-3)
Kingdom: Nate (3 seasons)
White Collar: Dianna (6 seasons)

I realise none of these are in current runs, but they're there for the watching. Some of the stories are more postive than others, especially depending on what show they're on, but these all have significant characters who were around for multiple seasons. All were part of ensambles, but their stories had big impact for their shows. Yes, some of them die, and some of those deaths are gross -- spoilers (Nate), but at least one of them (Stahl) is so greatly deserved. -- /spoilers.

Last year. Black Sails, the main character was in love with a man, ran for 4 seasons. And for queer ladies, The 100 has a bisexual main character and The Good Fight a lesbian one.
