Does attraction to a character influence how you write about a ship?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-30 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I have a pairing that I'm really into right now and that I've written quite a bit for. I'm fine writing it from the female half's perspective, but I have a lot of trouble writing it from the male half's perspective, and the thought of writing smut from his POV makes me downright uncomfortable.

I've recently realized that this is because I'm attracted to her but not to him. When I'm writing from her POV, I can kind of dissociate and be like, "this how she sees him. This is how she feels about him." When I'm writing from her POV, I can't quite be sure of that separation, and there's always a part of me, even if it's not totally conscious in that moment, that's thinking, "what if this is just me being pervy and expressing my own silly crush?" There's an element of, "this is too personal" and also an element of, "am I objectifying this character?"

Has anyone else experienced this?

Oh ffs, I should proof-read better.

*"When I'm writing from her POV" should read "when I'm writing from his POV"

Sort of. I recently realized I'm attracted more to the female half of my OTP than to the male. I don't have trouble writing from either POV but I think I put a lot of myself into the male character. Which isn't so bad at long as people can't tell, I guess. For example I have trouble picturing him making the first move, and while that's in character for him it's also something I can't picture myself doing.

I have to be attracted to at least one person in a ship for me to want to write about them.

Honestly, who cares if you're projecting? Isn't that the point of fic? To write your own idea and perspective into the already-existing world?

Also, it's okay to objectify a character! They're not real!

It doesn't seem to matter to me. But the character I write the most about is the one I"m attracted too. And I've got so many ideas about his character, I can write about him. I'm not attracted to the ones I pair him with, but I can write in their mindset about how they feel about the other character.

TBH, I think it might be a little different because the character I'm attracted to enjoys being objectified. I don't worry too much about that because he feeds off it, gets aroused by arousing others. He needs praise and attention and admiration. So I don't feel bad about writing other characters seeing him that way. He tries to make them see him that way. He wants it.

Yes, but on the opposite end. ALL of my smut writing is personal. I have to be attracted to characters to write either POV. I can't dissociate and write smut. I have to feel an intense erotic connection to what I'm writing. I've never stopped to ask myself if I'm objectifying the character because that's rather the point of why I do it.
