I think the line reading made this scene work beautifully. She didn't say it sharply (as she had done earlier in the movie) she said it directly but kindly.

This is my favorite adaptation of P&P.

Mine too. I absolutely love it and may like it even better than the book.

That scene is one of my favorites in the 1995 series. It was the moment the two of them opened up to each other for the first time. She didn't say it meanly, she said it gently, and as a ribbing against herself as well (and also meaning *she* wasn't good with people either).

my friends keep trying to get me to see the 2005 movie and now I'm wary.

Ooh, that series....so very pretty.

If you love the book and the 1995 series, then yes, be wary. A lot of people like the 2005 version, but it's heavily rewritten to sound more "modern" and a lot less like Jane Austen. Like this particular scene, the phrasing is changed and much of the nuance is lost. The writer does NOT trust the audience to "get" the subtleties of Austen's work and wit and feels like it needs to spelled out to viewers. It's not that it's terrible as a period film per se, it's just that it's not really Pride and Prejudice.

Try and find the 1979 BBC version.....

Agreed. Many scenes in that particular adaptation fail in tone and delivery. Granted, it’s been a long time since I saw this version, but I remember thinking how off it felt when I watched it.

(Sorry, I still can’t get over how this Darcy feels rather bland and whiny.)

I actually liked the guy who plays Darcy, in that I felt it was believable that he really loved Elizabeth and really changed. That said, I really disliked it overall. Elizabeth just seemed to look sly all the time and it annoyed me.

I think that's down to Keira Knightley. I can understand why she was cast and I think she does well in other roles, but I don't think she makes a good Elizabeth.

I agree.
