I am so here for this remake.

JD is too blah, though.

Ah yes, here for the remake where the popular kids are all minorities while the protags are your straight, white, cis protags.

No, here for the remake where the bullies are straight outta tumblr.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-01 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, yes, because all that matters to your cis, white, straight self is that those icky minorities that are Tumblr stereotypes get put in their goddamn place.

News flash: if Tumblr is your idea of the stereotypical bully, you need to touch grass because it's still rich, cis, straight white people by far.

You match my idea of a bully very well

Clearly you’re in a lot of pain to make comments like this. I feel sorry for you.

have you seen the movie? jd and veronica are not exactly the good guys.

Yeah, but the Heathers are arguably worse. The entire point is they're the straight white popular girl bitch stereotype while the protags at least have a "reason" for their everything and are at least marginally sympathetic. Let's be real: the reason minorities were put in those roles was to score diversity points but also not have to make them decent people and thus actually care about them.

Heathers punched up. It took a shot at the rich and the white and the cis and the straight. Now it's punching down at minority groups, because, "Oh, those are the kids who are popular right now!" Yeah, my little brother's bisexual friend is totally popular. That's why he got beat up a few weeks ago. Non-white people are popular, that's why there's non-white racial violence everywhere. It's hip to be non-cis, that's why trans people are still fighting to even use the correct bathroom.

Shut the fuck up.

Yeah, there is are reasons why, in the context of 1989, why the Heathers were the epitome of suburban Reagan Youth, why Veronica and J.D. attempted to posthumously slander Heather Chandler and the guys as depressed and gay, and why that slander backfired. A lot of that text has to do with the fact that straight culture of the 1980s was more than willing to go into performative hysterics over dead LGBTQ people and people with mental illnesses but unwilling to do squat while we were alive. (That's not quite true, they threw pep rallies and pushed "just say no" through popular music.)

So I'm really stumped about how this is going to work given a reality where black girls are about 5 times more likely to be disciplined for trivial infractions, while trans and gender-nonconforming queer youth are more likely to be beaten or sexually assaulted in the halls than class president.
