I think that particular storyline did poorly by both Poe and Amilyn.

The characterization is weirdly inconsistent with Poe in the comics and Amilyn in the Princess of Alderaan book. Sure, that was when she was a teenager but so was Leia, and she's still quite similar.

They're a lot more alike than the movie shows.

I find it really weird that you're judging the main canon characterization according to the tertiary materials, but I'm glad you at least have versions you like?

it's not like i'm talking about Legends stuff, the comics are canon and take place shortly before TFA, and TLJ takes place like....a week after, that book is canon.

Poe and Holdo being extremely similar was a huge part of what I took from the movie, tbqh. It really came across with the sense that they were two very, very similar people who were butting heads because they were so similar and because they were put into conflicting situations by the course of events.

Which is part of the reason that I liked the storyline a lot more than most other people seem to have done, I guess.

Yes, I don't get people who come out of that with a Team Poe vs. Team Holdo perspective, but YMMV I guess.

I was somewhat surprised by how far Poe took it but I didn't hate the storyline.

I feel the same way you do with Poe and Amilyn. I prefer their book/comic versions to the movie. But I guess that might be because those were my first real interactions with characters (since Poe didn't get to do much in TFA).

Actually right now the books/other supplementary materials are doing more for me then the actual films. I've enjoyed the films just not as much, which is ironic because I avoided the books before the new stuff started coming out. Mostly because it was just too much material for me.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-02 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I like that you don't go into detail on which way you feel about the storyline.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-02 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, that works out fine then, because I have no interest in conversing with people who will judge me based on my take on one thing.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-02 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Especially if that take on a thing is a hugely subjective matter and OP pretending they have the only "right" version says more about OP than the people they judge.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-02 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
+1000
This says a lot about your own judgmental attitude, OP

(Anonymous) 2018-02-02 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Why? You can tell a lot about somebody based on how they view something. Take politics for example. You know everything you need to know about a person if they say they voted for Trump.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-02 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
OK, but having a bad opinion about Holdo isn't nearly as bad as voting for Trump

AYRT

(Anonymous) 2018-02-02 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
The difference is that knowing someone's take on Holdo doesn't let me predict what their take on other things is, whereas if I encounter a Trump supporter I can make some guesses about their opinions on other topics, and those guesses are likely to be spot on.

I think her character was mostly bland but the biggest issue I had was her design. She looks more at home on that casino planet.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-02 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
I think her dress was very Star Wars appropriate. It was similar to other basic/elegant dresses seen in the series. Her purple hair was a bit different, but we've seen so many strange hairstyles, why not different colors? Especially for a presumably high-class, wealthy woman.

I agree that the character didn't exactly jump out as memorable to me, either. She just wasn't quite horrible enough to be a great villain (or even just antagonist to Poe) but she wasn't fantastic enough to make an impression, either. The death scene was cool, but those few seconds were the only time I was engaged in her character.

She seemed like a cool character but the whole storyline was so irrelevant that it annoyed me every time it came on screen.

I have yet to hear any story or any story line that could not be legitimately criticized. Judge people by how they treat you, not their perspective on characters and stories.

Okay, I have zero clue who this is (character wise) or the storyline in question. All i can say is - fuck me. She is still. So. Hot.

Amilyn Holdo from the most recent Star war

OP judge me please

I hated the conflict. Didn't like how the purple haired person talked down to the black haired pilot person in the same condescending method that villain characters use, but in the end the movie tries to pull off a "it's okay, everyone was actually cool and honorable, and totally well-meaning! Now look at their noble sacrifice!"

I'm not mad at the characters. I'm irritated by the dumb writing.

Honestly, the writing for TLJ is so bad. This entire plot and Rose and Finn's mission could be wholesale removed from the movie and absolutely nothing would change.

Yes, there's Need To Know, but Holdo's plan of faking everyone staying on the ship but actually escaping? Not one of those plans. In fact, she kept is secret from more or less everybody, meaning even high ranking members had no idea what was happening and decided Poe was right. How did they even have time to prepare for the evacuation if fucking no one on the ship except like... Holdo and two more ppl, even knew about the plan??? (And how did no one notice? Were they just going to leave all their shit behind on the ship???)

They could just have... not written that entire storyline, and just had the FO send out some "spy ships" and thus find out the Resistance was trying to hide-escape in those shuttles and wow look at that, we've removed like 60% of the movie's screen time and nothing has changed at all.

Honestly, a way better way to do it if you WANT to keep Rose and Finn's mission is just having Poe take them and the idea to Holdo—because Holdo has fucking talked to everyone about what their fucking plan is—and them deciding that yes, we'll send Rose and Finn on the mission, but we'll keep this other plan as a backup just in case they fail.

Ok but what if you have no idea what the hell it even is?

Meh. I liked her, and I thought Laura Dern did a good job playing her. That said, it doesn't particularly bother me if people don't like her character or storyline.
