Thank you.

Every time someone complains to me about them, I go "So buy me that 200$ Jupiter Ascending Tonner Doll or w/e it's called. Oh you don't want to? Neither do i, that's why I have this."

I agree.

I mean, hey, the one I have is maybe a little dead-eyed, but it's not that bad.

It just sits there. Silently judging me.

Waiting for the signal from its fellows.

can someone explain to me what is even the appeal of figurine merch? like

they don't do anything, they just take up space

I like having cute nerd things but not if I'm just going to forget them on a shelf. Like, I have a letter opener shaped after Bilbo's sword from the hobbit, and homestuck T-shirts and shit. But figs are like....dolls you can't even play with, really.

But some people will pay tons of money for them, or are really glad there's a cheap option, and I just...why?

Hey, at least they're not bobbleheads.

I actually love Funko Pops. I have far too many. I have a couple more detailed figures that I was gifted, but I prefer the Funkos. :O

(Anonymous) 2018-02-02 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Funko-Pop doesn't appeal to me personally, but yeah, a lot of the complaints seem really judgmental (honestly, merchandise in general leaves me pretty cold, even the really detailed stuff).

The only Funko-Pop figurine I object to is the one of Vivec, from the Elder Scrolls. It is disrespectful to present a member of the Tribunal in such a shallow light. Every time I see one, I feel the need to cleanse myself by performing the Pilgrimage of the Seven Graces. Vivec is the union of male and female, the magic hermaphrodite, the martial axiom, the sex-death of language and unique in all the middle world... not some damn toy!

I personally find them ugly and won't buy even though I have been tempted because they were the only mercy for some characters I like. But nah, I don't like them and for that, even the comparatively small amount of money they cost would be too much for me.
What I don't get is people getting so hung up about other people liking them even though they themselves don't. Just because I wouldn't buy them doesn't mean nobody else should. If it brings someone joy to collect them, that's great.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2018-02-02 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
They're cute little toys that look like toys. And since they don't involve any comic-book cheesecake (which, for Bob Ross, would be just plain wrong) I'm not embarrassed to have them out when my mom or my landlord drops into the apartment.

I don't think they're cheap, but I do think they're ugly, lul. I'd rather find something custom on etsy or, in even more obscure cases, customize and mix some symbols and colors as pendants or some sort of bracelet to represent something. I don't mind other people buying these--but I can't turn off my judgement on their ugliness, either. :^)

I don't collect 'em, but I do think they're kinda cute. I do have one of Fluttershy that I got at a yard sale a while back, and if they ever made ST:Voy figures, I would definitely at least get a Janeway and a Seven.
anarchicq: (Breyog from Flight of Dragons)

[personal profile] anarchicq 2018-02-02 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I thought they were dumb.
Now I own a Negaduck POP.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-02 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I'd rather pay for good fan merch or commission something custom than buy something shitty and soulless.

I like some and dislike others, so I only get the ones I like. Simple.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-02 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get the fuss. They're cheap, they're kinda cute and they make people happy. Why all the hate?

If you want another option for merchandise, I suggest getting a custom scarf. I bought one from wildemasche for under $50. Very pleased with the results.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-02 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
My friend is in love with these things, and I don't have much interest, but it's nice that she gets joy out of collecting them.
I like that she can afford to have them all over her place, and they're not something she has to put in bubble wrap or in a glass case to avoid breaking. I think she's made some friends through trading them too.

I feel this but at the same time I am privately thankful that my fandom has assloads of $25-35 figures which are quite nice, cover the range of obscure characters that I enjoy more than the mains, and don't look like deformed shit.

I hate POPs because they're ugly, not because they're cheap.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-02 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
I think they're ugly as shit, but so is a lot of merch, so I don't care if other people buy them. But I've ended up with three because people keep giving them to me for my birthday and I really don't want them, but I can't now give them away either because the people who gave them to me will notice.

I love those silly things!

(Anonymous) 2018-02-02 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not repulsed by their existence, but I don't see the point, either. I went through a stage in high school where I had to BUY ALL THE MERCH EVER for the things I was obsessed with, so it's not like I don't understand the appeal and sense of joy for buying something from your favorite series. I guess I'm in the point of my life now where those kinds of things just take up space.

But mostly, all those things look the same. They aren't beautiful, unique-looking action figures. They are cartoonish and all they do is sit there. Like the cheap-looking Happy Meal Toy of merch.

I like them. I only have Lion from Steven Universe and Darkwing Duck. I want Wembley from Fraggle Rock, Helga & Arnold from Hey Arnold, and Rose Quartz from Steven Universe. I watched a video someone made where they repainted Rose Quartz and they added her sword and shield.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-02 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
Like, that's all well and good but I still find them ugly.
