can someone explain to me what is even the appeal of figurine merch? like

they don't do anything, they just take up space

I like having cute nerd things but not if I'm just going to forget them on a shelf. Like, I have a letter opener shaped after Bilbo's sword from the hobbit, and homestuck T-shirts and shit. But figs are like....dolls you can't even play with, really.

But some people will pay tons of money for them, or are really glad there's a cheap option, and I just...why?

I at least understand this viewpoint. I dig stuff that has a multiple use too (Hello, my 32 mugs of various Disney movies), but sometimes you like something so much and a Pop is the only representation they have.

Also I want to see that letter opener.

haha, maybe part of my confusion is that a lot of my favorite properties are semi-obscure book series that are never going to have ANY merch, pops included, so I'm not used to that outlet.

Anyway, it's here: https://www.amazon.com/THE-HOBBIT-STING-Letter-Opener/dp/B009OANBH6

there's also glamdring and orcrist, but I like having Sting, because it feels appropriate for it to be little and letter opener sized. :3

For me, I guess it's similar to buying a nice painting to hang on your wall. It's decoration. That's why I always get a yearning for the really big and detailed figurines, the same way I'd really want to buy a really nice painting. I want something pretty that I can put on display. And if some people buy something cheaper to put on display, like getting a poster instead of a painting, then great.

this makes sense, thank you! man, I used to have a ton of HP posters as a kid.

I was thinking of it mostly in terms of *buying* or *having*, and I've never had a ton of space to put more stuff, so decoration-with-volume wasn't really on my radar until this.

If I had a place for them, I'd definitely collect fancy merch like the nicer figurines and models and lithographs and stuff. (I do have a few items like keychains, and I have some stuff in a storage unit, but I basically live out of a suitcase bc I'm in hotels all the time, so....)

Personally I get the warm fuzzies from supporting the content creators I like, so I buy a lot of DLC and soundtracks and stuff like that. And it makes me happy to see things that remind me of things I enjoy. And the cooler the item is or the more I like it, the more positive my feelings are going to be. It's kind of the fandom version of putting up pictures of your family all over the house.

So something like this...
https://www.amazon.com/Funko-Games-Effect-Garrus-Figure/dp/B00BW0RGE0
I'm going to be like, okay that's pretty cute but I can take it or leave it. It doesn't look much like Garrus and it doesn't remind me of anything.

But this...
https://www.amazon.com/Big-Fish-Toys-Mass-Effect/dp/B006W1IRE2
Every time I look at that I'm going to be like "FUCK YEAH, GARRUS, MY BUDDY!!!" I'm going to think about all the cool scenes and missions with him.

it's home dec for people who hate conventional home dec. ALl of ours are lovingly displayed on multiple varieties of shelves and curios in our house, because we do not go for vases which are never meant to hold flowers, or giant-letter words like JOY standing on a table, or bizarre pictures of lobsters to go with our nautical theme even though we've never even been on a rowboat let alone an actual ship.

take that age-old argument about "why is fandom dumb but sports people can do their sports stuff and buy their sports memorobila and it's totally legit" and adjust it to be about figures and decorating your house.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-02 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
this. i work in a store that sells home dec stuff and let me tell you, there are a ton of people who spend tons of money on stuff that is ugly as sin. give me funko pops over hideous macrame wall hangings any day.
